Gen Y forces workplaces to evolve. Has yours? ? North Jersey Small ...

Excerpts from an article posted by Ragan Communications. See the full article for more information.

?From open floor plans to online collaboration to the fast-fading annual review, in the workplace the times, they are a-changin?.?

??workplaces everywhere are changing and evolving as Generation Y elevates its profile. Your office is probably one of them. One major change lies in internal communications.?

?Generation Y does not define success as a 9-to-5 job, working alone at a desk. Collaboration has become increasingly important. Employees want open space, with few walls?

?Generation Y is the digital generation. Millennials grew up with computers and the Internet, and they developed and matured as it did. To technology-centric employees, communication comes in every new form (and, occasionally, the good old phone call). These newer channels can benefit your company; online communication is fast, convenient, and often free of charge.?

?Gen Y wants feedback, reviews, conversations?anything that tells them how they?re doing, what they can improve upon, and where they stand within the company.?EmployeeEvolution.com?predicts a change in protocol: ?Gen Y will invent the on-the-spot performance review. The smartest companies will train their managers in giving frequent feedback, and the companies that don?t will get a quick reality check when their Gen Y employees demand them.?

?With a large influx of younger employees, it?s important that your business adapt, reinvent, and accept change as it?s requested.

What're On the web Paid Reviews, and Do Online Paid Surveys Really

The truth is that the opinion counts, and businesses want to know what you believe. Usually you sign up with one of these marketing and research organizations as panelists that supply surveys focused to your demographic, geographic area and more specific attributes that they are looking for. When signing up as a new panelist you will usually have to complete a form and give some general information that will help the marketing company determine if you are a good fit for a specific survey. The best part is that after the organization has your report the surveys will generally only send you surveys via email that you can answer and complete easily. The common time needed to complete a particular study depends on several things, certainly one of which is the capability to type. The faster that you are able to type certainly the faster you?ll be able to accomplish each survey.Another thing to keep yourself informed of is that there are a great deal of scam sites out there claiming to be legitimate questionnaire internet sites that you could make money on and they are merely a horrible scam trying to get you to invest your time on them, and they will pay you nothing. There are a great deal of reputable companies though. One caution is that you get what you pay for, and while you may have to pay just a little money to get an to date and true listing of recent survey companies it is well worth not having to find out the hard way doing work without the reward.Typically the survey achievement time takes somewhere between 15-30 minutes and they will generally pay between $50-$80 for you performing a survey. You can also visit the Job Centre Online for more information how you can start making money online by getting a trustworthy organization that works with proper marketing and research companies to get you started today.

The standard of life of people has increased in a rapid rate by the increase of technology. Marketing has now evolved as e marketing and commerce as e commerce. Almost everyone who runs a business now has website. If you have a website it is inevitable having a hosting service. There are different types of hosting services according to your needs.? The type of webhosting service is decided by the traffic and contents of the website. The best hosting plan available is the dedicated hosting service. Dedicated hosting plans are suitable for all websites.? A dedicated server is available to the customer if one is opting dedicated hosting service.

One of the main advantages of choosing a dedicated server is the availability of multiple domains. If you are running an online business then selecting the dedicated hosting service will be a smarter option as you have to register many websites. The configuration of the server can be decided by the user in the case of a dedicated server. Dedicated server offers more reliability and high performance and hence they are the favorites in the cyber world.

If we are having a single server for all our websites the management will be easier. In the case of a dedicated server there will not be a restriction for data transfer rate or data storage. Dedicated hosting shows high rate in the case of filtering of spam. The difference will be noticeable in a few days. The customer service in the case of a dedicated hosting service will be much better when compared to other hosting services.

Reseller hosting can be done if you are choosing a dedicated server. You can sell the cyber space to other companies. This method is used by many companies as a way to increase the profit. If you are a blogger getting more than 20,000 visitors per day changing to dedicated hosting service is essential. As the traffic increases, servers with more bandwidth as required and hence dedicated servers can be said as the most apt choice.

One of the main factors while we have to consider while maintaining a website is the security. In the case of shared hosting all websites will be sharing a particular server space and all will have the same IP address. Let me explain the problem of having same IP address for different websites. If one of the websites sharing your IP address is banned or shut down it also affects your website and can affect the credibility of your online business.

So after reading all these points I guess you understood that getting a dedicated service will be the smarter option. although if you are a starter don?t go for dedicated hosting services all of a sudden , dedicated hosting services are for those who are in the business for quit of long time.

Choose the best dedicated server india and Windows reseller hosting india.

200,000 flee Aleppo as Syria battle rages

Around 200,000 civilians have fled fighting in Syria's most populous city Aleppo and many more were trapped, the UN said as a fierce government offensive against rebels entered a second day.

The opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) on Sunday accused the government of preparing to carry out "massacres" in the northern city and pleaded for heavy weapons to enable rebels to meet the regime onslaught.

The SNC also urged the UN to hold an emergency session to discuss ways to protect civilians caught up in the conflict.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, on a surprise visit to key ally Iran, said the rebels "will definitely be defeated" in Aleppo, even as a Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander boasted the city would become a "graveyard" for the army's tanks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday's fighting was focused around the southwestern neighbourhood of Salaheddin, where rebels repulsed a ground assault on Saturday.

"There are clashes on the edges of... Salaheddin" which regime forces were pounding with helicopter gunships, the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP, describing the situation as "a full-scale street war".

After massing for two days, troops backed by tanks and helicopters on Saturday launched a ground assault on Salaheddin, where rebels concentrated their forces when they seized much of Aleppo on July 20.

Both sides claimed to have made advances, but an AFP correspondent reported rebels had largely repulsed the army when it launched its first onslaught.

Civilians in the city of some 2.5 million crowded into basements seeking refuge from the intense bombardment by artillery and helicopters, the correspondent said.

UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said in a statement that an estimated 200,000 people had fled from Aleppo in two days and an unknown number were still trapped in the city.

Amos said in New York that she was "extremely concerned by the impact of shelling and use of tanks and other heavy weapons" on civilians in Aleppo, Damascus and other locations.

She said that many people in Aleppo had sought shelter in schools and other public buildings. "They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water," she said.

Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Oqaidi, FSA commander for Aleppo, said the rebels had inflicted heavy losses on the army in Salaheddin but that there had been many civilian deaths.

"Aleppo will be the graveyard of the tanks of the Syrian army," Oqaidi told AFP in an interview at an isolated farmhouse surrounded by olive groves near the city.

"We ask the West for a no-fly zone" in order to prevent aerial operations by Assad's forces, he said.

The colonel said his men were positioned across Aleppo and would not withdraw as they had when they came under intense fire from regime troops in Damascus earlier this month.

"There is no strategic withdrawal of the Free Syrian Army. We await the attack," he said, while refusing to reveal how many rebels were fighting in Aleppo.

"We expect (the army) to commit a very great slaughter, and we urge the international community to intervene to prevent these crimes," he said.

The British-based Observatory reported that 67 people were killed across the country on Sunday.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that the assault on his own population in Aleppo would be a nail in his coffin.

"It's pretty clear that Aleppo is another tragic example of the kind of indiscriminate violence that the Assad regime has committed against its own people," Panetta told reporters on a military plane en route to Tunisia.

"And in many ways, if they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people in Aleppo, I think ultimately it will be a nail in Assad's coffin," he said.

"He's just assuring that the Assad regime will come to an end by virtue of the kind of violence they're committing against their own people."

In Tehran, Muallem vowed regime forces would crush the rebels in Aleppo.

"We believe that all the anti-Syrian forces have gathered in Aleppo to fight the government... and they will definitely be defeated," he told a joint news conference with Tehran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

As the rebels faced the superior firepower of Assad's regime, SNC chief Abdel Basset Sayda called on foreign governments to provide them with heavy weapons.

"We want weapons that would stop tanks and jet fighters," Sayda said after talks in Abu Dhabi.

The SNC also called on the Security Council to hold an emergency session on the situation in Aleppo, Damascus and Homs, urging it to "take action to provide civilians with the needed protection from brutal bombing campaigns".

Peace envoy Kofi Annan urged both sides to hold back, saying only a political solution could end a conflict that rights activists say has killed more than 20,000 people since the uprising erupted in March 2011.

Iraq bombings kill six

Bombings in Iraq killed six people on Sunday, including two policemen, and wounded 21 others, security and medical officials said.

A car bomb in a market in Al-Muqdadiyah, 90 kilometres (55 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killed four people and wounded 13 others, a local police officer and a doctor said.

Another car bomb killed two policemen and wounded three others east of Fallujah, Lieutenant Colonel Abed Awda Ismail of the Fallujah police and doctor Assem al-Hamdani from Fallujah Hospital said.

Also in Fallujah, located west of Baghdad, a roadside bomb wounded four people, they said.

And in the north Iraq city of Kirkuk, a magnetic "sticky bomb" wounded Major Rabih Nadhim of the Oil Protection Force, while police found the body of a 27-year-old border guard north of the city, police Colonel Sherzad Arif said.

The latest violence comes after Iraq suffered a spike in unrest in June, when at least 282 people were killed, according to an AFP tally based on figures from officials and medical sources.

Violence in Iraq has declined sharply from its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common.

Humpback whales staying in Antarctic bays later into autumn

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Large numbers of humpback whales are remaining in bays along the Western Antarctic Peninsula to feast on krill late into the austral autumn, long after their annual migrations to distant breeding grounds were believed to begin, according to a new Duke University study.

The study, published July 30 in the journal Endangered Species Research, provides the first density estimates for these whales in both open and enclosed habitats along the peninsula in late autumn.

It suggests that the little-studied bays are much more important late-season feeding grounds for humpback whales than scientists previously thought. It also highlights changes that are occurring in the region in response to the increasingly delayed arrival and reduced extent of annual winter sea ice cover, associated with rapid climate change.

"The old dogma is that by late autumn, the ice is heading in and the whales have headed out. But 70 percent of our surveying took place in waters with no ice, and we detected 371 groups of humpback whales over a 654-kilometer survey area, with density estimates of up to 1.75 whales per square kilometer," said David W. Johnston, research scientist at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment and lead author of the paper.

At that density, Johnston said, "if you were to walk to the bridge of a ship and look around, you'd spot two whales within 500 meters of the boat. That's higher than anyone expected."

The scientists found the highest densities of whales in narrow, enclosed sections of Wilhelmina Bay, Andvord Bay and the Errera Channel. They found the lowest densities -- as low as 0.02 whales per square kilometer -- in the open water of the adjacent Gerlache Strait, which separates the Palmer Archipelago from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

They conducted the study aboard the National Science Foundation (NSF) research vessel Laurence M. Gould in late April through early June of 2009. NSF funded the study.

Johnston's co-authors are Ari S. Friedlaender, research scientist; Andrew J. Read, Rachel Carson Associate Professor of Marine Conservation Biology; and Douglas P. Nowacek, Repass-Rodgers University Associate Professor of Marine Conservation Technology. All four are stationed at the Duke University Marine Laboratory. Nowacek holds a joint appointment as associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering.

Scientists have long known the waters around the Western Antarctic Peninsula are important foraging grounds for humpback whales that feed on swarms of shrimp-like krill there, but previous studies have been conducted earlier in the season or in open waters farther from land.

"Establishing the autumn density of humpback whales in the inshore regions of the Western Antarctic Peninsula is crucial for understanding the role they play in this rapidly changing ecosystem," said Friedlaender. "Our results provide a new perspective on the magnitude of predator-prey relationships in the region as the Antarctic winter sets in.

Being the first to estimate densities in the peninsula's narrow in-shore waters was a challenge, Johnston said, because the line-transect techniques and distance sampling methods scientists traditionally use for this type of study weren't well suited to the bays' tight quarters, tricky currents and jutting shorelines.

"We had no idea that the whales were going to be packed up in these narrow channeles and passages. We had to think on our feet a bit and use alternative sampling approaches and incorporate data from other portions of the project," he said. For instance, data collected from tagging the whales and tracking their underwater movements turned out to be inordinately useful for estimating densities, too.

"Once we knew their dive behaviors, we could establish how likely it was that we might miss them as we were traveling along the surface of the water," Johnston said. "That's not something we would have been able to do using only the traditional methods."

How You Can Lose Fat And Gain Muscle ? Weight Loss For Men ...

?

Everything you know about weight loss and building muscle is wrong! The average person gets their fitness and health information from the media or worse yet, the FDA. Unfortunately, both of these entities have agendas that are in direct conflict with providing you and me with sound advice when it comes to our health and well-being. One of the prevailing myths is that you can?t lose fat and gain muscle at the same time.

Listen to the so called experts and they will tell you that if you are eating to lose weight then you are not providing your body with enough calories to build muscle. These same experts will also have you believe that if you are taking in enough calories to pack on muscle then you are also going to be packing on unwanted body fat as well. In a nutshell, the experts will have you believe that losing fat and gaining muscle can only be accomplished individually. Most nutrition plans and workout programs do fail miserably when it comes to losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time. The reasons for this are many but generally these plans fail in two main areas:

1. Most plans have you eating the wrong foods at the wrong time 2. Most programs are built heavily around hours of slow cardio work.

eating the proper foods and the timing of when you eat is a critical element that is going to make or break any program designed to lose weight and gain muscle. Equally as important as nutrition is the type of workout program that you utilize. While hours of mind numbing slow cardio work will help you shed pounds, much of the weight you will be losing will be lean muscle. A more effective approach is to use a combination of sprints and interval training.

Yes, you can lose fat and gain muscle. However, you must have both your nutrition and workout plans dialed in. Neglect either one of these areas and you will find that your progress will be much slower that you would like. Dial both of these areas in and watch the weight fly off and the muscle get packed on!

Educating and Treating Athletes with Eating Disorders | Press ...

2012-07-27 20:54:56 (GMT) (WiredPRNews.com - Health & Fitness, Press Releases) Eating Disorder Eating Disorder

07/26/2012 (press release: FrankieCervantes) // Denver, Colorado, United States // Frankie Cervantes

With the 2012 Olympics vastly approaching, it is important to remember how the world?s finest athletes may be affected by eating disorders and what can be done to prevent them. The Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDCD) reports that a percentage elite athletes in eight class sports experience abnormal eating behaviors from dieting. These behaviors can lead to physical health issues, performance issues and psychological concerns.

However, the Eating Disorder Center of Denver offers treatments for a variety of eating disorders for athletes, including the most common anorexia and exercise bulimia at their outpatient clinic. They also provide educational opportunities on eating disorders ranging from cultural body image to eating topics.

In many cases athletes struggle to disclose information to coaches, friends and family. The key challenges with treating exercise bulimia are athletes may think their competitors view them as mentally weak, or the stigma of illness contraindicates athletic identity. At EDCD, treating athletes with an eating disorder like exercise bulimia begins with understanding and appreciating athletics and athletic temperament.

Dr. Tamara Pryor, Eating Disorder Center of Denver clinical director, suggests athletes consciously evaluate their athletic pursuits and assess their goals realistically, taking exercise recovery days, planning during their off-season, and monitoring exercise intensity and volume carefully.

?Many athletes are so dedicated to their craft it can be easy to overlook the health risks of excessive exercise,? said Dr. Pryor. ?Athletes need to remember to maintain a healthy competitive nature and sustain those thoughts with realistic exercise routines and diets to increase their athletic performance.?

The Eating Disorder Center of Denver suggests athletes plan meals carefully, maintain regular exercise progression and avoid extreme fad diets or weight control supplements to prevent eating disorders.

About Eating Disorder Center of Denver

Established in 2001, Eating Disorder Center of Denver (EDCD) is one of the nation?s foremost centers for the diagnosis and treatment of the full range of eating disorders. EDCD is committed to empowering individuals 18 years of age and older suffering with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and related disorders to help them achieve and sustain recovery. A multidisciplinary team of board-certified psychiatrists, physicians, clinicians, family therapists and registered dietitians work together to create a specialized, evidence-based treatment plan for each patient. A new and improved SLA conference in 2013 | Upstate New York ...

Posted on 27 July 2012.

A New and Improved Conference in 2013

This Plan is Our Plan:
Connect, Collaborate and Strategize for a Better SLA Annual Conference

Plans for SLA 2013 in San Diego are shaping up. The 2013 event reflects exciting new features that YOU, the members of SLA, have called for in recent surveys, discussions on the leadership list, recommendations to the 2011 CE task force, and conference attendee feedback.? The San Diego conference will be more focused, more flexible, and support more collaboration among units.

What?s new and different for 2013?

  • Fewer but better CE sessions.? Continuing education will be offered on a single day (Saturday), and ALL CE programming will be Division-based and vetted according to SLA Professional Development standards.? Divisions decide for themselves how much to charge for their CE sessions within a wider range of cost options.? Association-sponsored professional development courses have moved online as to not compete with division offerings at conference.

Think quality, not quantity:? These courses will provide focused learning opportunities that will have???? a true impact on?practical skills, knowledge development, and career advancement.? Our goal is for educational content to be of immediate, problem-solving relevance, with actionable takeaways.

  • Conference will start and end a bit earlier.? Opening events a full day early will allow us to close the conference Tuesday evening, thus potentially saving the Association money on convention center rental costs and saving you the cost of a hotel night and an additional day out of the office.

The schedule does reduce the total number of programming slots by one, but divisions are already getting creative in response:? they?re collaborating more and experimenting with new ways to produce events, such as holding an annual business meeting and educational programming online, outside of conference.

  • Four 120-minute time slots provide opportunities to dig deeper into the most relevant topics and offer more advanced programming.? Divisions have been asking for greater flexibility for in-depth programming ? you have been heard!
  • Leadership development training is integrated and expanded.? The pre-conference Leadership Development Institute has been replaced by broader leadership development programming during the conference, and all interested members are invited to attend.
  • The Awards event will be held on Sunday, encouraging broad participation in a re-conceptualized program.
  • Tours move to Wednesday.? We?ll still have the great tours you won?t want to miss, or you can just stay over to enjoy San Diego.

Focus on Relevance

Relevant and engaging program content is at the heart of a successful SLA Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO.? To build the strongest possible program, the Annual Conference Advisory Council, in conjunction with SLA staff, will review all requests for programs.? We expect to decrease the number of under-attended sessions, encourage collaboration among units, and ensure that we are providing our members with opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge, hone expertise, advance and expand their careers, contribute to the success of their organizations, and become leaders of the profession.

Looking into the Future Together ? We?re FUTURE READY

This plan is well-aligned with your SLA Board?s strategic vision.?? We all recognize that the annual conference is SLA?s biggest membership benefit, as well as our largest source of income.

Our commitment in response to your feedback is to increase collaboration across SLA?s divisions in pursuit of more focused, refined content. The result?? Planners? collective professional experience and institutional knowledge will ensure conference programming is relevant to your needs, providing a range of options from the highly specific to the broadly accessible.

Together, we can make our shared experience in 2013 the best SLA Annual Conference yet!

See you in San Diego!

Division Cabinet Chair-Elect
Board Liaison to the 2013 Annual Conference Advisory Council

One important thing you should do is to investigate. The web is a great place for that. If you find a clinic where you think you could get you cosmetic surgery done, Google it! Find out about the quality of their work, how much experience they have, and if possible, what others think about them. All that will help you to come to a conclusion whether the clinic is good enough or not. Plastic surgery in Costa Rica usually is of good quality, but it?s always good to make sure. Cosmetic surgery is very important, so you must take all this information into consideration.

Another aspect that you should take into account is the salubrity of the clinic. This is very important because if the place is not clean enough, you could get an infection. Therefore, when you are trying to decide, walk into the clinic and look around. Analyze whether there are alcohol dispensers (which most clinics and hospitals have in Costa Rica). Do the doctors use rubber gloves? Are the janitors cleaning up? Do the doctors sterilize the tools? Those are the questions that must be answered.

Last, but not least, socialize with the plastic surgeon that will perform the cosmetic surgery. Get to know his/her attitude. Most people in Costa Rica are friendly, but there are exceptions, and you must make sure that this person is not one of them. If you are wondering why, the reason is that this person is going to have your life and health in his/her hands, so it is a good idea to know that s/he will care enough.

To conclude, cosmetic surgery is possible, but you must think about where to do it. Plastic surgery in Costa Rica is a great option. Costa Rica plastic surgeons are great, and you pay less. However, you must make sure that the clinic where the procedure will be done has been well investigated (by you), that it is clean, and that the plastic surgeon is friendly enough. Follow these three tips and you will see that the clinic you choose will be the best option of all, so choose well, and enjoy the changes!

Palestinians in Syria get pulled into civil war

BEIRUT (AP) ? Like other communities sucked into Syria's widening civil war, the Yarmouk neighborhood in Damascus has seen death and destruction. Soldiers and snipers have gunned down demonstrators. Some protesters have taken up arms to fight back.

But there's one key difference: Most of Yarmouk's residents are not Syrian citizens. They are Palestinian refugees.

Since the start of the unrest, Syria's half-million Palestinians have struggled to remain on the sidelines. They've said they have little to gain and much to lose by taking sides in the fight between President Bashar Assad's regime and the armed rebels seeking to end his family's four-decade rule.

But young Palestinian refugees, enraged by this month's mounting violence and moved by Arab Spring calls for greater freedoms, are now flooding the streets and even joining the rebels despite efforts by the community's political leadership to keep them out of the conflict.

Large protests began two weeks ago in the country's largest Palestinian refugee camp, Yarmouk, a neighborhood of nearly 150,000 refugees crowded into simple apartment buildings on narrow streets in the Syrian capital. Security forces fired on the protesters, killing at least five and setting off a cycle of funerals, demonstrations and further crackdowns.

On Thursday, activists said troops posted outside Yarmouk were shelling the area, likely in preparation for a raid.

"There are cars that have blown up and homes that have blown up," a Palestinian activist in Yarmouk who gave his name as Abu Omar said via Skype, booms audible in the background. "We are really in a war zone now."

Violence has struck other Palestinian camps too. More than two-thirds of the 17,500 refugees in the southern city of Daraa fled an attack this month, the U.N. said. While many have returned, food and medicine are lacking.

The U.N. says it cannot provide death tolls for Palestinians because of the difficulty of confirming information. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that about 150 have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011. Palestinian activists provided the names of 198 people killed, 67 in July alone.

Most of Syria's 496,000 U.N.-registered Palestinian refugees are descended from those who fled or were forced to leave their homes during the war surrounding Israel's creation in 1948. Others have come during subsequent Mideast wars.

While not citizens, Palestinians in Syria have greater rights than their brethren in other Arab countries. They can hold government jobs, attend state universities for free and serve in the military. Assad's regime has long billed itself as a champion of the Palestinian cause.

But the Syrian uprising, which began with political protests and has evolved into a civil war, has put the Palestinians in a bind. As the death toll spiraled, many were horrified by Assad's brutal attempts to crush the opposition but didn't want turn on a government that treated them well.

"On the individual level, there's no love for the regime or its tools of oppression, and no one thinks that it will liberate Palestine for us," said a Palestinian refugee expert in Lebanon who visited Syria this month. "The idea is that if we take a position on one side or the other, we'll get screwed."

He declined to give his name because he travels frequently to Syria.

The political leadership, dominated by older men from an array of Palestinian factions, recalls all too easily how Palestinians elsewhere have suffered for picking sides in foreign conflicts. Kuwait kicked out hundreds of thousands of Palestinians near the end of the first Gulf War because of their leadership's links to Saddam Hussein.

"I fear that in the next stage the camps and the youth will be pulled into the internal conflict," said Fathi Ardat, the Palestine Liberation Organization's top official in Lebanon. "We don't want to be part of that battle."

Some factions have cooled relations with Assad's regime.

Top Hamas officials have decamped from their longtime Damascus headquarters for Egypt and the Gulf. In a February sermon in Cairo, Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas Prime Minister of Gaza, praised Syrians for "moving toward democracy and reform."

The only group firmly with the regime is the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, which the U.S. and other countries consider a terrorist organization ? as they do Hamas. Its fighters are widely accused of joining Assad's forces in the crackdown.

To date, no Palestinian faction has denounced the regime, putting them at odds with Palestinian youth in Syria.

The forces pulling young Palestinians into the war grew stronger this month.

On July 11, the bodies of 15 soldiers from the Palestinian Liberation Army, a branch of the Syrian armed forces, were found outside of Aleppo, the country's largest city. There were conflicting accusations about who killed the soldiers, but many Palestinians blamed Assad's regime.

On July 13, hundreds of Palestinians protested in Yarmouk, accusing Assad's forces of killing the soldiers and calling for the regime's ouster because of its brutality toward other Syrians. Security forces opened fire on the crowd, according to amateur videos posted online, and activists say five people were killed.

Protests continued as rebels pushed into the capital from the countryside and clashed with security forces in surrounding neighborhoods, sending civilians streaming into the camp. The U.N. said this week that more than 7,000 displaced people were staying in 17 schools in Yarmouk.

On July 19, rebels ? including some Palestinians ? torched a police station on the camp's edge and a dozen security cars posted around it.

As violence entered the camp, more youth joined in.

"At first, most people said we won't interfere because this is a problem between Syrians," said Mohammed, a refugee from Yarmouk who now lives in Britain. "Later, more said it was about freedom, so it doesn't matter where you're from."

While most have avoided arms, some Palestinians have joined the rebels in battle.

"They have taken a position with the revolution, but they have not made this public because that could bring a massacre to the camp," said a Syrian rebel near Yarmouk who gave his name as Abu Qusay.

Ironically, Palestinian activists say it was their integration into Syrian society ? facilitated by Assad's regime ? that pushed them into the uprising.

"We have never felt that there was a big difference between the Palestinians and the Syrians," said Abu Omar, the Yarmouk activist. He is 22, has spent his whole life in Syria and was getting a free university education when the uprising broke out.

He dismissed the idea that Assad's regime has been a leader in the Palestinian struggle, pointing out that Syria's border with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights has been largely quiet since 1974.

In fact, he said he hoped a regime change would help the Palestinians achieve their ultimate goal: the return to their ancestral villages in what is now Israel.

"We have to work together with the free people to liberate Syria, then we'll go to the Golan and liberate Palestine," he said. "We'll work hand in hand."

Apple says Samsung patent royalty demands unfair

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc said Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is demanding from the iPhone maker a far higher patent royalty than it pays to other licensers, at a rate the South Korean company has never sought from any other licensee.

Samsung is demanding a 2.4 percent rate on the "entire selling price" of Apple's mobile products, the Palo Alto, California-based company said in a U.S. court filing on Wednesday. The information was contained in freshly unsealed portions of a legal brief in a high profile patent lawsuit between the two companies.

"Samsung's royalty demands are multiple times more than Apple has paid any other patentees for licenses to their declared-essential patent portfolios," Apple said in the documents.

However, Samsung said in a separate filing on Wednesday that its offer "is consistent with the royalty rates other companies charge" and that Apple never made a counter offer.

"Instead, it simply rejected Samsung's opening offer, refused to negotiate further and to this day has not paid Samsung a dime for Apple?s use of Samsung's standards-essential technology," Samsung said.

The legal filings do not disclose the rate Apple pays to other companies for standard essential patents. These are patents which Samsung has agreed to license to competitors on fair and reasonable terms, in exchange for having the technology be adopted as an industry standard.

In a court filing on Tuesday, Apple had said it should pay one-half of 1 cent per unit for each infringed standard essential patent.

Apple and Samsung, the world's largest consumer electronics corporations, are waging legal war around the world, accusing each other of patent violations as they vie for supremacy in a fast-growing market for mobile devices.

One of the key issues in dispute between the companies is how to value Samsung's standard essential patents, which some judges are reluctant to issue injunctions over.

A trial in San Jose, California, federal court is scheduled to start July 30.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, 11-1846.

Quick Tips for Creating a Social Marketing Strategy for Your Business

By now, most businesses have started to incorporate social media into their marketing plans. However, many of those businesses are also moving forward without a clear strategy, something that will more than likely come back to haunt them.

Whether you?re preparing to dip your toes into the social media pool for the first time or you?re already there but aimlessly swimming in circles, here are some quick tips to help you build an effective social strategy:

Fish Where the Fish Are

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+? new social networks have been popping up like mushrooms after a rain (though many of them disappear just as quickly). Most businesses simply do not have the time or the resources to be fully engaged on every possible social site.

If you spread yourself too thin, you?ll just end up with a lot of social profiles with little to no engagement. Since social media marketing is about building relationships, that?s pointless. Instead, focus on the networks where your existing customers are most active.

To find out where your customers are, make use of surveys and take a look at your web analytics. Jay Baer has some recommendations for more involved detective work here, or you could use Dukky to create a promotion that utilizes social sharing, and then track the networks your customers are most active on.

Stop, Collaborate and Listen

It?s tempting to jump in, guns blazing?but stop. Listen. Monitor mentions of your company, industry and products to get a sense of what the conversation is like and what type of content appeals to your target audience. This information will prove invaluable as you formulate a strategy.

Set Goals

Like any other type of marketing, social media marketing needs to be accountable. Set goals and objectives ? determine what you intend to accomplish with your social campaign. Then, decide what metrics will be used to measure the success of your actions.

Not sure what to track? Here are some helpful posts from around the web:

Create a Content Strategy

Decide what type of content you?ll post to each network, and how often. Remember that the type of content that?s appropriate will vary by network. It may help to create a calendar that shows product launches, sales, and other marketing events along with major holidays to help you optimize your posts.

Get Started

Finally, it?s time to put your plan into action. Establish a profile on the sites you?ve chosen to focus on, and (this is crucial) start interacting. Mind your manners, don?t be spammy, measure the results and adjust your strategy as needed.

We?d love to hear about your experiences building a social media strategy. Share them in the comments!

21 Suffer Burns in Tony Robbins Firewalk in San Jose | Personal ...

Motivational speaker Tony Robbins regularly inspires guests at events to participate in a firewalk in order to empower themselves in life, but on July 19 the event lead to the injuries of 21 people. Out of those who suffered burn injuries, three individuals were taken to the hospital, according to CBS San Francisco.

As part of the speaker?s ?Unleash the Power Within? event, approximately 6,000 people took part in the ?Firewalk Experience,? where they walk over 10 feet of hot coals. While organizers of the event are focusing on how many were not injured by the event, 21 people had some level of burns, mostly to their feet. On-site medical teams provided treatment to those who were injured, but three called 9-1-1 and were taken to the hospital for what were deemed second- and third-degree burns.

Additionally, 9-1-1 calls were placed later that day from those who were continuing to suffer the effects of the burns after receiving treatment, but the exact number was not released. Tony Robbins has been incorporating the firewalk into his events for almost three decades, with the coals being advertised as ranging between 1,200 and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit during the event.

Suffering a burn injury can have both short-term and long-term debilitating repercussions. Depending on the severity of the injury, a victim may suffer skin, tissue, muscle, and even bone damage. While surgeries and other medical procedures are often required, the worst burns leave permanent damage.

At Van Der Walde & Associates, our San Jose burn injury lawyers understand the serious nature of such injuries and can help victims hold those who caused their injuries responsible. Through compensation from the at-fault party, the road to recovery can become easier and be without financial repercussions. For more information on how we can help you, call us today at (877) 862-6288.

Libor Scandal: New York Fed Silent On Barclays' Admission Of Rigging Benchmark Interest Rate

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was then head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, did not communicate in key meetings with top regulators that British bank Barclays had admitted to Fed staffers that it was manipulating Libor, the Washington Post said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Documents released by the New York Federal Reserve Bank this month showed regulators in the United States and England had some knowledge that bankers were submitting misleading Libor bids during the 2008 financial crisis to make their financial institutions appear stronger than they were.

The reliability of the London interbank offered rate, which underpins transactions worth trillions of dollars, has been rattled by revelations that bankers manipulated it to profit on trades and hide their own borrowing costs during the crisis.

Among other details, the Fed documents included the transcript of an April 2008 telephone call between a Barclays trader in New York and Fed official Fabiola Ravazzolo, in which the unidentified trader said: "So, we know that we're not posting um, an honest Libor."

However, senior officials and investigators never heard an appeal from the New York Fed to investigate possible wrongdoing over Libor, the Washington Post said, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.

Geithner, through a spokesman, referred questions to the New York Fed, which declined to comment, the newspaper said.

The New York Fed and Treasury Department could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters outside regular U.S. business hours.

Background check applications for gun buys surge in Colorado

DENVER (Reuters) - The number of people in Colorado applying for background checks to purchase firearms has surged in the aftermath of the movie theater shootings in Aurora, law enforcement officials said on Tuesday.

In the three days after the rampage, 2,887 people were approved for gun buys, compared with 2,012 the weekend before, a 43.5 percent increase, according to data supplied by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The bureau has an online background check system that tracks and processes gun permit applications. The system does not show how many guns were actually sold.

A gunman clad in tactical body armor and a gas mask and carrying three guns opened fire at a midnight showing of the new "Batman" film early on Friday, killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.

Suspect James Eagan Holmes, 24, was arrested minutes later behind the theater and made an initial court appearance on Monday.

Brandon Baker, owner of Rocky Mountain Guns & Ammo in Parker, Colorado, about 15 miles from Aurora, said business had been brisk since the shooting.

"Our gun sales have gone up, but we've had more requests for training," said Baker, a certified firearms instructor. "I'm booked up for the next 2 1/2 months."

Most of the people seeking firearms or training had been women, Baker said, adding his training included "situational awareness" in addition to firearms proficiency.

Sally Ride dies at 61; first American woman in space

In the early days of the space program, astronauts were ex-Marines, Air Force officers and hot-shot pilots. Sally Ride got there a little differently: She answered a want ad.

In the late 1970s, NASA decided that, in addition to pilots, it needed some astronauts with more training in the sciences. More than 8,300 applied for a position, and she was one of only 35 chosen. Why, she later said, was a "complete mystery."

Ride went on to become the first American woman sent into space, the youngest American sent into space and the first woman to make two trips. She also was the sole astronaut appointed to the Rogers Commission to investigate the 1986 explosion of the shuttle Challenger.

FOR THE RECORD:
An earlier version of this article suggested that Ride founded her company, Sally Ride Science, in 1991. She founded the company in 2001.

Ride died Monday at her home in La Jolla after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61.

Her trip into space made Ride a household name and a symbol of the ability of women to break the glass ceiling, inspiring generations of young girls and women who came after her.

"Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism ? and literally changed the face of America's space program," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. "The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally's family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly."

"The impact of Sally Ride and women like her cannot be overestimated," said Amy Mainzer, an astrophysicist who is a principal scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Ca?ada-Flintridge. "She was an 'existence proof,'" Mainzer told The Times. "She proved that it was possible to work in space physics and as a space scientist and be female at the same time. What she did was prove that you could make it all the way to the top and accomplish amazing things in these fields ? and still have a pair of ovaries."

The first woman in space was Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, but she was a former textile worker who was sent into space as "window dressing." The second was Svetlana Savitskaya, a former pilot who also was the first Russian woman space walker.

By contrast, Ride had much more extensive scientific training. She held a bachelor's degree in physics from Stanford University and a master's and doctorate in astrophysics from the same institution. Nonetheless, when NASA called her in 1978, she had to go back to school to study basic science and math, meteorology, guidance, navigation and computers. She also received flight instruction on a T-38 trainer jet, an experience that left her with a joy for flying.

In the week before her first shuttle flight, she told Newsweek that "I did not come to NASA to make history. It is important to me that people don't think I was picked for the flight because I am a woman and it is time for NASA to send one."

Ride served her time on the ground in preparation for her first flight. She was the capsule communicator for the second and third shuttle flights and helped develop the shuttle's robot arm. On June 18, 1983, she entered space aboard the shuttle Challenger for mission STS-7, becoming the first American woman and, at age 31, the youngest person in space. The crew deployed two communications satellites and conducted pharmaceutical experiments.

With Ride and Col. John M. Fabian operating the robot arm, it performed the first deployment and retrieval of a satellite.

Shortly after landing, Ride said, "The thing that I'll remember most about the flight is that it was fun. In fact, I'm sure it was the most fun that I will ever have in my life."

Ride was again aboard Challenger for mission STS-41, which launched on Oct. 5, 1984. This time, the arm was put to some unusual uses, including scraping ice off the shuttle's exterior and adjusting a radar antenna.

She was training for a third flight when the Challenger exploded in January 1986, and she was named to the Rogers Commission that investigated the disaster. During the probe, she was reportedly the only public figure to support Morton-Thiokol engineer Roger Boisjoly, who had warned of technical problems that led to the accident.

She was later quoted as saying that astronauts did not receive adequate warning about the potential dangers of the shuttle. She told the Chicago Tribune: "I think that we may have been misleading people into thinking that this is a routine operation."

Ride subsequently transferred to NASA's Washington headquarters and authored a report titled "Leadership and America's Future in Space." She also founded the agency's Office of Exploration before resigning in 1987 to work at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Arms Control.

Understanding How Online MLM Works

???

By : Chris Kosman ?? 14 or more times read
Submitted 2012-07-23 03:16:15 Multilevel marketing on the internet is based on the very framework of its offline counterpart: building networks of individuals who will buy and sell products. Since over a billion of people in the world are internet users, the web has definitely become a great place to make money. This is the reason why online MLM hasn t stopped gaining popularity since day one.

There are a lot of benefits in getting into MLM online. For one, you can do your job without having to dress up. A shirt and shorts pair would do just as well as a tux. Two, you can only talk to people who are truly interested and not waste time on those who d rather be some place else. Three, you can have your business running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and you won t have to pay for pocket breaking labor costs and ceiling high utility bills. In fact, your maintenance cost can remain just as low as when you were still only tinkering with your computer, idly jumping from one website to another. Doing MLM online can also help you reach a wider audience international, in fact. This makes expanding your business a problem of the past. Most importantly, getting into this business would not require you to be a business graduate, nor would you have to be a computer geek. Multilevel marketing can be done by anyone who has enough gut and determination, one who puts premium on teamwork and cooperation.

Starting Online Multilevel Marketing Business

The first thing you need in order to start your own MLM internet business is an online presence. You need a working website which will serve as your cyber office . This is where you will conduct business. No website, no business.

Securing your own site would be a wise idea rather than opening an account powered by a bigger site. Before building the website itself though, you first need to come up with a domain name. Buy your own .com . This will give you the complete freedom of managing your place of business by just paying a few dollars a year.

When choosing a domain name, you can either pick one that it is related to the MLM group or team you are in, or come up with something enticing that people could get attracted to easily. You also have to make your domain name easy to spell and recall; one that would not need to be written on a piece of paper in order to be remembered.

Now, after deciding the domain name for your online MLM business, you will have to buy a hosting service and start building your website. If you are clueless about web design, you can probably ask a friend who knows about it. If you don t know anyone who can, you can either ask your host about their site builders and pre made templates or hire a professional website creator.

Your website must have:

1. a company profile
2. products and services

Multilevel marketing on the internet is based on the very framework of its offline counterpart: building networks of individuals who will buy and sell products.

  3. opportunities
  4. a system for ordering products
  5. a system for registration (for those who are interested in joining the network)
  6. training and support team information
  7. a list of advantages for those thinking of joining the team
  8. free offerings of newsletters and e books
  9. an autoresponder
