Bangla's Kamal is 'hopeful' of becoming vice-president

Calcutta: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has amended its constitution (actually, the Articles of Association) to ?create the post of chairman, remove the role of vice-president and vary the powers of the president.?

All, of course, from 2014.

That the changes were on track was reported in these columns on Thursday, after the two-day Executive Board meeting, in Kuala Lumpur.

The day marked the start of Alan Isaac?s innings as the last president with powers which will vest with the chairman from 2014, at the end of his two-year term.

New Zealander Isaac doesn?t have a deputy for now, but Bangladesh?s A.H.M. Mustafa Kamal is ?hopeful? of becoming the (last) vice-president, in October.

By rotation, it is Pakistan-Bangladesh?s turn to nominate the vice-president and Kamal, a very influential Member of Parliament and the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, is their choice.

If Kamal becomes the ICC vice-president, after the next Executive Board meeting, in October, then he?ll surely become the first president in a dramatically changed structure.

?I?m hopeful of becoming the vice-president in a few months... The post will only get abolished in 2014,? Kamal told The Telegraph from the Shangri-La in Kuala Lumpur.

Apparently, at least one highly influential member of the ICC has ?assured? Kamal that obstacles won?t be placed in his way.

Kamal, however, isn?t taking anything for granted. Quite sensibly, for one learns that he has been asked to make a ?presentation? for the benefit of the rest of the Executive Board.

That amounts to Kamal being put through a test, which is unprecedented.

While the chairman?s term will be for two years, 2014 onwards, the president won?t be in office for more than a year. That, too, in a ceremonial role.

The chairman, incidentally, will also head the ICC?s commercial arm ? IDI Ltd.

It?s still rather early to say what will happen in 2014, but the buzz is that India?s Narayanswami Srinivasan (who has taken over as the Asian Cricket Council president) and England?s Giles Clarke have their sights on the chairmanship.

The ICC?s media release talked of ?creating? the post of chairman, but it should really be reviving. Till 1997, the ICC used to be headed by a chairman.
