Wanna be the leader? You gotta have friends

As ever, it's not what you know, but who: the structure of social networks, both online and off, seems to confer leadership on those with the most friends. Chains of command can form without members of a group ? including the leader ? ever needing to know who's on top.

It is often suggested that the most influential individuals are also the best connected, but the idea has been difficult to test in a real-world setting. Cedric Sueur of the Free University of Brussels (ULB), Belgium, and colleagues instead looked at how two species of macaque ? Macaca tonkeana and Macaca mulatta ? reach group decisions, such as when and where to move on.

Rule of thumb

They found that the leadership hierarchy in both species emerged via a simple rule-of-thumb: individuals followed the lead of their closest affiliates. Consequently, the individual with the most social connections becomes the leader in a self-reinforcing hierarchy.

There seem to be advantages to following the most socially connected individual. "If others in the group happen upon a bit of information then maybe [the socially connected leader] will have better access to that as well," says co-author Andrew King of the Royal Veterinary College in Hatfield, UK. That means the leader will tend to make better-informed decisions. "From a very simple rule of following your mates, you get these decisions that seem to be best," he says.

King is now experimenting with similar network structures in fish. "We hope that these are general principles that we're uncovering," he says.

George Sugihara of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, who was not involved in the study, suggests that such structures may indeed be common. "A lot of the properties we see in food webs [the feeding connections between organisms] can be obtained with really simple assembly rules," he says.

Sugihara also highlights the importance of identifying similar patterns of connectivity in human society. A recent study of Facebook connections suggests that when it comes to people, more variables come into play. Gender, age and relationship status all help determine our level of influence over acquaintances.

Bangla's Kamal is 'hopeful' of becoming vice-president

Calcutta: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has amended its constitution (actually, the Articles of Association) to ?create the post of chairman, remove the role of vice-president and vary the powers of the president.?

All, of course, from 2014.

That the changes were on track was reported in these columns on Thursday, after the two-day Executive Board meeting, in Kuala Lumpur.

The day marked the start of Alan Isaac?s innings as the last president with powers which will vest with the chairman from 2014, at the end of his two-year term.

New Zealander Isaac doesn?t have a deputy for now, but Bangladesh?s A.H.M. Mustafa Kamal is ?hopeful? of becoming the (last) vice-president, in October.

By rotation, it is Pakistan-Bangladesh?s turn to nominate the vice-president and Kamal, a very influential Member of Parliament and the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, is their choice.

If Kamal becomes the ICC vice-president, after the next Executive Board meeting, in October, then he?ll surely become the first president in a dramatically changed structure.

?I?m hopeful of becoming the vice-president in a few months... The post will only get abolished in 2014,? Kamal told The Telegraph from the Shangri-La in Kuala Lumpur.

Apparently, at least one highly influential member of the ICC has ?assured? Kamal that obstacles won?t be placed in his way.

Kamal, however, isn?t taking anything for granted. Quite sensibly, for one learns that he has been asked to make a ?presentation? for the benefit of the rest of the Executive Board.

That amounts to Kamal being put through a test, which is unprecedented.

While the chairman?s term will be for two years, 2014 onwards, the president won?t be in office for more than a year. That, too, in a ceremonial role.

The chairman, incidentally, will also head the ICC?s commercial arm ? IDI Ltd.

It?s still rather early to say what will happen in 2014, but the buzz is that India?s Narayanswami Srinivasan (who has taken over as the Asian Cricket Council president) and England?s Giles Clarke have their sights on the chairmanship.

The ICC?s media release talked of ?creating? the post of chairman, but it should really be reviving. Till 1997, the ICC used to be headed by a chairman.

Injections of corticoid preparations can have severe side effects. In this issue of Deutsches rzteblatt International, Christian Holland and coauthors contribute to physicians' awareness of problems of this type with a report on the relevant findings of medicolegal expert committees in Germany (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2012; 109[24]: 425-30.

One patient, for example, received multiple intramuscular injections of dexamethasone and diclofenac for the treatment of back pain. Six weeks after the last injection, 500 g of necrotic tissue had to be surgically removed from the site of the injections; a subsequent wound infection led to multiple further hospitalizations. The authors describe both aseptic and septic complications, including abscesses and purulent joint infections. When they affect the spine, such complications can cause weakness of varying degrees of severity, ranging all the way to para- or tetraplegia. Fatal sepsis can also occur.

From 2005 to 2009, the German medicolegal expert committees and arbitration panels dealt with 278 cases of complications after corticoid injections. Medical errors were found to have been committed in 40% of cases. Typical errors were faulty asepsis, treatment without indication, and injections that were too closely spaced in time or in excessive doses. Furthermore, whenever it is determined that a patient has not given legally valid informed consent for an injection, the physician is liable for any and all adverse consequences of the injection for the patient's health. By giving physician readers the appropriate knowledge base, the article is intended to help them avoid such difficult medicolegal situations.

(AP) ? Searchers pulled out 15 bodies buried under mud, rocks and debris on Thursday, raising this week's death toll to 106 from landslides and floods caused by heavy monsoon rains in southern Bangladesh.

Officials said the landslides occurred mainly in remote villages with poor roads, making rescue work more difficult.

At least 41 died in Cox's Bazar, 41 in neighboring Bandarban and another 24 in Chittagong, mostly in a series of landslides, the Disaster Management Ministry said. It said soldiers joined the search for the missing in all three areas and found 15 more bodies buried in debris Thursday.

About 500 houses were washed away. Officials said more people may be missing, but they didn't know how many.

Three days of torrential rain in the region of small hills and forests dislodged huge chunks of earth, which buried flimsy huts where families were sleeping late Tuesday and early Wednesday. Many of the dead were women and children, officials said.

In Bandarban, 11-year-old Rafiqul Islam was the only member of his family to survive because he was away when mud buried his hut. His parents and three siblings died.

"I could survive because I was visiting a relative," the boy told The Associated Press. "The rain had kept me from returning home."

Monsoon floods are common in Bangladesh, a delta nation of 160 million people. Many homeless people live at the foot of the hills or close to them, despite warnings from authorities.

Volunteers using loudspeakers warned people about the danger of landslides during the rains, said Jaynul Bari, a government administrator in Cox's Bazar. The floods inundated dozens of villages and were disrupting communications in the region.

Flood waters covered many roads and washed away a railway bridge, snapping road and rail links between Dhaka and the three districts. An airport in Chittagong was closed after floodwaters swamped its runway, but reopened Wednesday after the rains stopped, officials said.

The government said relief workers were distributing rice and water to hundreds of displaced people.

Looking for a roleplay partner

Obviously, from the title, I am in search of new roleplaying partners. I have only participated in 1x1 roleplays, although I would be more than willing to do a small group. I have been roleplaying for several years now on and off but am fairly new to this site. I have a big imagination and am looking for a partner that can co-create amazing worlds and characters.

Much of the information I will be stating can also be found here: www.freewebs.com/ohyoumakemesmile
I will be posting the just of it below, though.

- First off, I ask that you be literate to advanced+. I would prefer a minimum of one paragraph responses, although I understand that dialogue posts will be shorter and at the end of the day I would rather see quality over quantity. Give me a decent amount of information to work with and I will do the same for you.
- I ask that you be mature. I like to incorporate gore, lust, violence, language, dark twists, ect. in my roleplays. I do respect others limits but I would rather us be on the same page.
- Most importantly, make sure you share all your ideas! Don't be afraid to suggest something just because you think I might find it silly. Nonsense! I am extremely outgoing, nice and my imagination runs wild. We can make our roleplays pretty bizarre. I want us to be happy with our world and the characters in it. Sugggesstttttt.

Here is what I am craving as of now, although I am more than happy to do anything on my full list on my site. Don't be afraid to combine any or suggest your own if you don't see it!
- Fantasy
- The Hunger Games
- Pokemon
- Avatar: The Last Airbender
- Harry Potter
- Ancient Rome/Greece/Egypt
- Odd Pairings (almost any combination)

*** PLEASE PM ME. DO NOT RESPOND HERE.

Alright, well, I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully getting to make some long-term partnerships!

Fred DavisAP

It?s the Summer of Law for the NFL, and the latest piece of legal news relates to a fascinating case that somehow has remained off the radar screen for more than a year.

Redskins tight end Fred Davis was sued in early 2011 by Makini Chaka, a 33-year-old self-described ?celebrity broker,? who says she organizes parties for famous people.? Luke Mullins of the Washingtonian tells the story of the litigation and its various twists and turns, including the fact that Davis has been acting as his own lawyer.

And it shows.

?It?s just all made up and flagellant,? Davis told the judge during an April 10 hearing.

Chaka, who also is representing herself, claims Davis dumped juice on her head and busted her lip at a D.C. nightclub.? She also has accused Davis in court documents of assaulting, harassing, and threatening to kill her.? Chaka obtained a temporary restraining order in January 2011, which she has since claimed Davis violated.

The court proceedings have included Davis accusing Chaka of procuring prostitutes, an allegation Chaka has denied.? The April hearing featured an exchange regarding whether Chaka has her hand on a man?s genitals in a photograph.

Davis: ?As it shows, you also have your hand on his genitals. I mean why would you take a picture like that??

Chaka: ?I do not. Let?s look closely at the exhibit right here, Judge. Where is my hand placed in this exhibit??

Judge: ?I do not answer questions. . . . The witness does.?

Chaka: ?Can you tell me where my hand is actually at in this photo??

Davis: ?It looks like it?s in the genitals to me. I mean your hands are on his genitals. Your hand is on his ??

Chaka: ?Objection.?

It?s unclear why Davis, who signed a one-year franchise tender earlier this year with the Redskins, doesn?t have a lawyer.? Though it may not be the smartest move Davis ever made, it?s sure to provide even more entertainment as the litigation continues to unfold.

Trial is set for March 11, 2013.? Here?s hoping that one of the litigants requests a change of venue to the courtroom of Judge Sapp.

JP MORGAN: Facebook's Mobile Business Isn't As Bad As You ...

By Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Facebook CFO David Ebersman

?

The big investment banks are out out with their initial ratings on Facebook.

We're gathering them all up today. Check here to see the investment banks' research as we get it.

So far, we have Doug Anmuth of J.P. Morgan's note. He rates Facebook "overweight" and gives it a year-end 2013 price target of $45. (J.P. Morgan was a co-lead on the IPO.)

He calls Facebook the "social infrastructure of the web" and lays out three key reasons to be bullish:

  • Facebook ad platform growing stronger. While Street focus is likely on the shift toward mobile usage, we point out that Facebook?s advertising platform is also in the midst of an important transition?ads are becoming more social, they are more prevalent in the News Feed, and the Facebook Ad Exchange should increase advertiser demand and inventory yield.
  • Early feedback on Sponsored Stories is positive. Based on our checks we are increasingly bullish on Sponsored Stories in the News Feed on both desktop and mobile. Early data suggests click-through rates and eCPMs for both are several times those of Facebook?s traditional desktop ads.
  • Mobile monetization may be better than people expect. Facebook likely will continue to roll out mobile ads in a measured manner going forward, but we believe Sponsored Stories in the mobile News Feed have been turned on more in just the past few weeks and initial results appear positive. Our analysis suggests mobile could become a $300M-$500M quarterly revenue opportunity for Facebook in the next 2-4 quarters as higher pricing and visit frequency offset fewer overall impressions.

As for the nitty gritty details on what Anmuth expects from the business:

  • We expect growth to trough in 2Q and reaccelerate in 2H12 and into 2013. We project 2Q12 revenue of $1.1B (+24% Y/Y) and EBITDA of $587M (+6%, 53.1% margin), but we expect revenue to reaccelerate and margins to expand modestly Q/Q in the back half driven largely by continued solid user growth and newer ad formats. We project 2012-2015 three-year CAGRs of 33% for revenue and 35% for EBITDA.
  • Overweight rating and $45 PT. Our year-end 2013 price target of $45 is based on an average of two methodologies: 1) 17x 2014E EBITDA of $5.0B which yields $39; and 2) our DCF analysis utilizing a 3% terminal growth rate and an 11% WACC which yields $51.

Andrew Raven reports.

The astronauts docked their Shenzhou 9 spacecraft with the unmanned Tiangong 1 module 213 miles (343 kilometers) above Earth. It was the second orbital linkup in a week for the two spacecraft, which performed?China's first automated space docking?June 18.

Shenzhou 9's astronauts Liu Wang, Jing Haipeng and Liu Yang ? who is China's first female astronaut ? are the fourth Chinese crew to fly in space. The astronauts launched into orbit on June 16, atop a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China's northern Gansu province.

Tiangong 1 has been in orbit since September 2011, and was part of China's first robotic docking with the unmanned Shenzhou 8 capsule in November. The Shenzhou 9 crew made their first docking with Tiangong 1 June 18, marking the first time a manned Chinese spacecraft has docked with another vehicle in orbit. [Shenzhou 9: China's 1st Manned Space Docking (Pictures)]

Earlier today, the astronauts undocked the two spacecraft and flew Shenzhou 9 about 1,300 feet (400 meters) away. They then maneuvered their capsule by hand, with Liu Wang at the helm, back into docking configuration with?Tiangong 1?at 12:48 p.m. China Standard Time, or 12:48 a.m. EDT (0448 GMT).

"The success of the manual rendezvous and docking mission represents another important phase achievement of the Shenzhou 9 and Tiangong 1 rendezvous and docking mission," Wu Ping, spokeswoman of the China Manned Space Program, said during a press briefing following the docking. "The three astronauts will once again enter the orbiting module of Tiangong 1 to carry out scientific experiments."

The mission's docking maneuvers are a milestone in the development of China's manned space program, which flew its first astronaut in space in 2003. Tiangong 1 (which means "Heavenly Palace" in Chinese) is a prototype for China's first manned space station, which officials say will be functional by 2020.?

China is the third country after Russia and the United States to fly astronauts into space.

After today's docking, the Shenzhou 9 astronauts (known as taikonauts) received a message from a group of Chinese oceanauts who are setting records not above the ground but below it.

"We wish for a great success of the manual docking and brilliant achievements in China's manned space and manned deep-sea dive causes," read a message sent by three crewmembers aboard the Chinese submersible Jiaolong, 7,015 meters (23,000 feet) beneath the Pacific Ocean in the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot on Earth, state-run newspaper Xinhua reported.

The oceanaut crew?set a new deep-diving record?for China on June 22.

Shenzhou 9 and Tiangong 1 are due to stay connected for four more days, with the crew departing June 28 and landing back on Earth June 29.

Manhattan Apartment Property Fetches $280M | Commercial ...

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

JD Carlisle L.L.C. and DLJ Real Estate Capital Partners L.L.C. have just pocketed $280 million on the disposition of The Beatrice, the partners? 301-unit luxury apartment property in New York City?s Chelsea neighborhood. Equity Residential picked up the apartment asset, which consists of the top 29 floors of the 54-story, mixed-use building at 105 W. 29th St.

Equity Residential will have no worries on the leasing front. The Beatrice, developed above the 292-room Eventi Hotel by JD Carlisle and DLJ RECP, has been near maximum capacity since its rental program kicked off in the summer of 2010. Luxury rental accommodations are highly coveted in Manhattan and landlords are reaping the benefits. ?The market is very, very busy,? Paul Zweban, a senior vice president with real estate brokerage firm Prudential Douglas Elliman, told Commercial Property Executive. ?It?s very tight and land and landlords are not giving anything: no concessions. If we were having this conversation two years ago, I?d be saying they?re giving you everything.?

And investors can?t get enough of the market. Buyers are flocking to high-quality properties and the strong demand coupled with low supply has resulted in a 30 percent year-over-year increase in price, according to a first quarter report by Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services. ?New York City Class-A multi-family is a highly sought-after asset class delivering solid returns to institutional investors,? Jules Demchick, chairman of JD Carlisle, noted in a prepared statement.

Big-ticket apartment transactions this year include Wafra Investment Advisory Group?s purchase of the 144-residence 2 Cooper Square for approximately $134.1 million, or $930,000 per unit.

DirecTV quietly shifts n3D channel from 24/7 to part-time broadcasts

Nearly two years after launching its n3D channel broadcasting 3D content around the clock, DirecTV has reduced the channel to part-time programing hours as of June 1st. Whether the change is due to a lack of fresh content or viewer adoption is unclear and DirecTV's bland statement about waiting for both to grow doesn't hint either way, that the change had gone largely unreported for nearly a month does not bode well. In the meantime, 3Net and ESPN 3D continue to broadcast unabated with the latter going live from Wimbledon this week, and DirecTV has confirmed it will be airing tape delayed 3D footage from the Olympics provided by NBC this summer. After seeing all the early HD-only channels fall by the wayside we're not at all surprised to see this one go dark at least part-time, but the question will be whether 3D uptake is fast enough to keep broadcasters interested going forward.

[Thanks, KM]

Stuck with Islands of Efficiency? Comprehensive Energy Management Yields Greater Gains

?Imagine transporting a manufacturing executive from 1998 straight into an operations meeting (at the very same company) today. This wildly confused exec would look at today?s raw material costs and quickly pronounce them insanely inaccurate. Just over a decade ago, our world was dubbed as ?drowning in oil,? (a phrase coined in a March 1999 issue of the Economist). Experts predicted we had more than enough affordable energy and other (now-limited) raw materials to comfortably carry on rapid, global industrialization. But though our fuel was plentiful, data on how we used it was not. Needless to say, such a statement is not so easily made today. Volatile energy prices and uncertainty over the source that will power us into the future, compounded with rising environmental and climate-change concerns, have made energy efficiency and management a make-or-break strategy. And though our world has shifted, we now have one tremendously significant advantage -- a plethora of inexpensive, easily captured data. Integrated Solutions are Needed Comprehensive energy management integrates all parts of a business, from the data center to the manufacturing floor. It is no longer acceptable or smart to allow each domain of the operation to consume energy independently of the others. In fact, it is vital we know where our energy dollars are going, where more are needed and where consumption and waste can be reduced.
?
We?re seeing more and more of our customers in multiple industries combat rising energy costs by intelligently using available data to adopt energy efficiency and automation technologies, and apply them throughout the organization -- especially those that can optimize existing facilities or processes. Intelligent Metering Provides Granular View Advances in data collection, remote monitoring and automation have enabled the water and wastewater-management sector to precisely predict storms like never before; and alert, prepare and ready their operations for storms from one point of access -- saving energy and taxpayer dollars. In manufacturing, intelligent metering is being used to get a granular view into where and why high energy usages occur -- and eliminate them when unnecessary (such as on weekends when production drops). And in energy-intensive industries such as mining, companies are now adapting to governmental and societal pressures to reduce their carbon footprints by turning to three major tools: power metering solutions (to measure the entire spectrum of energy utilization, including air, gas, electric and steam); monitoring software; and enterprise energy management systems, which control the cost, quality and reliability of energy.

Turkey says Syria downed jet in international airspace

Turkey on Sunday accused Syria of shooting down one of its warplanes in international airspace, as a watchdog said the Damascus regime suffered new setbacks and violence reached new heights.

"According to our conclusions, our plane was shot down in international airspace, 13 nautical miles from Syria," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told TRT television.

Syria has said it downed the F-4 phantom jet on Friday after it violated its airspace, and on Saturday Turkey acknowledged the plane may have done so in comments seen as a bid to cool tensions between the former allies.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people were killed, including 16 troops, in clashes with rebel fighters in Syria on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

"The clashes happened almost simultaneously at dawn," in the northern province of Aleppo bordering Turkey, the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman of told AFP.

The fighting took place in the town of Dara Aza, and at military checkpoints near the town of Al-Atarib and the village of Kafr Halab, the Britain-based watchdog said.

It reported that following an attack on an artillery battalion, a number of soldiers defected, taking with them a large quantity of weapons.

And, in another setback for the embattled regime of President Bashar al-Assad, rebels captured 11 government soldiers in the central province of Damascus, it added.

"This is one of the bloodiest weeks in the conflict," Abdel Rahman said.

According to the Observatory's figures, 94 people were killed in Syria on Monday, 62 on Tuesday, 88 on Wednesday, 168 on Thursday, 116 on Friday and 116 on Saturday.

"It's like we are in a war," Abdel Rahman said. "Sometimes when two countries are at war, not even 20 people are killed a day. But now in Syria it has become normal to have 100 killed each day."

The mounting death toll was a result of the international community's inability to agree on a way to resolve the crisis, he said.

"The UN observers have suspended their mission and this is a very bad decision. They are just staying in Syria and not going out to observe," said Abdel Rahman.

"Either go out and observe properly or leave," he said, his frustration palpable.

Sunday's developments come after a bad week for the Assad regime.

On Thursday, a Syrian pilot was granted asylum in neighbouring Jordan after flying his MiG-25 fighter across the border.

Meanwhile, Iran, Assad's staunchest ally, called on Damascus and Ankara to show restraint after the shooting down of the Turkish warplane by Syria.

Tehran "asks both sides to show calm and restraint, and hopes that with tact and tolerance and dialogue this issue will be evaluated and through a peaceful resolution, tranquillity and stability will be preserved in the region," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying.

He made the appeal in a telephone conversation late Saturday with Davutoglu.

Anti-aircraft batteries hit the jet as it flew low and fast about a kilometre (less than a mile) from the coast over Syrian territorial waters, a Syrian military spokesman said, adding it was unidentified at the time.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had expressed his "deep concern" over the incident in a telephone conversation with Davutoglu, a spokesman said.

NATO member Turkey acknowledged one of its warplanes may have violated Syrian airspace, but its muted response has been seen as a bid to take the tension out of the latest rift between the former allies.

Turkey-Syria relations have already been strained by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's outspoken condemnation of the Assad's regime's bloody crackdown, which rights activists say has killed more than 15,000 people since March 2011.

Meanwhile, a Russian ship that tried to deliver attack helicopters to Syria entered the northern port of Murmansk on Sunday after being forced to turn back when news of its mission was leaked.

An unnamed Russian diplomatic source said the ship would soon try again to make the highly controversial delivery under the Russian flag.

The switch appears to be an attempt to avoid security inspections that come when sailing under the flag of a third country.

Russia says the Soviet-era Mi-25 helicopters are being returned to Syria after undergoing repairs under a contract that could not be breached.

The Alaed was forced to turn back after its mission was initially mentioned by the US State Department and then reported in the British press.

Those reports prompted the ship's British insurer to withdraw coverage, effectively barring it from entering any other ports on its journey.

97% Monsieur Lazhar

All Critics (93) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (90) | Rotten (3) | DVD (1)

A gentle film can still be searing in its effect on an audience, something that "Monsieur Lazhar" proves emphatically.

With a few folds, this story could have made a script for John Barrymore, like Topaze, or for Chaplin.

A sad, reflective study of the possibilities, and the impossibilities, inherent in the teacher-student relationship.

"Monsieur Lazhar" is good. Really good.

The film is rich in naturalistic, tossed-off details.

A standard liberal tale about an inspirational teacher gradually deepens into a quiet study of how grief works its way through a community.

Falardeau's adaptation of fellow Qu?b?cois Evelyne de la Cheneli?re's play honours the power of the written word (a motif reinforced throughout the film), and expands on its stage origins via remarkably-assured cinematic touches.

Falardeau dances delicately along the razor's edge of the familiar and the conventional. But he does so with tact and taste and just the right blend of tension and relief.

This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors. The movie also gets high marks in cinematography, sound, original musical score and editing.

Although it raises timeless questions about life and loss, and timely ones about mentorship and multiculturalism, "Monsieur Lazhar" would rather teach than preach.

... the perfect school drama for people who hate the Hollywood version of the genre, but are open to simple and moving stories about people doing the best they can in a world that doesn't always seem to encourage that approach.

A humanistic story about how tragedy has different effects on people.

a naturalistic ensemble drama about the possibilities - and the limitations - of the teacher-pupil relationship ... probably too low-key for mainstream multiplex tastes, Monsieur Lazhar is a temperate, generous and deeply affecting experience.

As the teacher, Fellag suggests Robert Downey Jr. channeling a quietly reflective Robert De Niro.

This is a good movie about teaching, but more importantly, a good movie about the loss of a loved one and how to cope with death.

There's a lighthearted inspiration infused throughout Monsieur Lazhar that makes it also touching, but never maudlin.

Everything about the film sets exactly the right tone, from the unforced and winning performances by the main children to the wintry cinematography to Fellag's quietly rueful performance.

The rare sort of movie that chooses not to focus on the dramatic, pivotal moments that happen in life, but what comes after.

One of the most touching films of the year. A brilliant tragedy that transcends boundaries of age, country, race, religion and gender.

tender and sincere, frequently striking a fine balance between the dictates of the "inspirational teacher" genre and a more mundane kind of realism that tamps down easy sentimentality and strives for something more organic and genuine

Takes the fairly dreadful 'teacher who makes a difference' sub-genre and puts an interesting new spin on it that gives it the allure of something fresh.

Some teachers will learn from it. All teachers will find it a reaffirmation of their vocation.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an emotionally engaging, deservedly Oscar-nominated drama with a terrific central performance from Mohamed Sa?d Fellag.

Half of inner city children in deprived areas consuming fast food/drinks at least twice a week

Half of inner city children in deprived areas consuming fast food/drinks at least twice a week

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Over half of inner city school-kids in deprived areas may be consuming fast foods/drinks at least twice a week, if the findings from one London borough are applicable elsewhere, suggests research published in the online journal BMJ Open.

One in 10 of these children visited a fast food outlet every day, the study shows.

The authors quizzed 193 pupils aged 11 to 14, living in Tower Hamlets, a deprived inner London borough, about their weekly fast food preferences and habits.

The children, who attended two schools which operated an "open gate policy" at lunchtime, were weighed and measured to see if their weights were appropriate for their age, gender, and height.

Over half of them (61%) were entitled to free school meals, and around one in three (30%) was overweight or obese, with almost a third of boys (32%) of boys and 29% of girls falling into these categories.

More than half of the children surveyed (54%) said they bought fast food or drinks from a fast food or takeaway outlet at least twice a week. And one in 10 consumed products bought from these outlets every day.

Frequency of fast food/drink consumption was not associated with age, gender, or entitlement to free school meals. But children from non-white backgrounds were more likely to be frequent consumers of fast foods.

Seven out of 10 children from Black ethnic backgrounds and more than half (54%) of those from Asian backgrounds purchased fast food/drinks more than twice a week. This is of some concern, say the authors, as people from these ethnic backgrounds are more prone to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The most commonly cited reason for buying fast food was taste, with 92% of the children saying they liked the taste of the products sold in fast food outlets. The second most popular reason was ready access: the children said they could buy fast food products quickly.

Among those who bought fast food at least two to three times a week, most (71%) did so because of the influence of their peers - they wanted to join their friends.

Analysis of the responses on food types and portion sizes showed that chips were the most popular option. Girls were significantly more likely to buy a portion of chips without other foods than boys, but boys were more likely to buy larger portions.

The authors point out that chips are laden with fat and salt, and high salt content increases thirst, which in turn increases the likelihood of buying soft drinks.

Most (70%) of the whole sample said they preferred sweetened (non-diet) soft drinks over other types of drinks, when making their purchases at fast food outlets.

When asked what would motivate them to make healthier food choices at fast food outlets, better choice and cheaper prices were the two most popular options.

"These children are exposed to an environment that is likely to cause obesity, and it is not surprising that in this situation, many of these children are already overweight or obese, and will likely become obese as adults," conclude the authors.

They add: "Clearly, actions need to be taken to either limit the ability of these children to access fast food outlets or to change to they purchased at these outlets (e.g. less calorie dense, with more fruit and vegetables, with less fat and salt)."

Russia's Putin: Who does he want to be in new term?

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin has travelled halfway round the world to show who is in charge of Russia since his return to the presidency last month. The trouble is, no one is sure who he is trying to be.

On Monday, the world saw a prickly, tough and uncompromising Putin grimace his way through a frosty meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama that revived memories of Cold War diplomacy. The body language was reminiscent of the old Putin.

Three days later, Putin was back in his home town of St Petersburg and turning on the charm for investors, speaking of transparency, reforms, the rule of law and a place for protesters who do not break the law. This was a different Putin.

Back in the Kremlin after four years as prime minister, the president is trying to adapt to ruling a different Russia where his tough guy image no longer fits and protests against his rule have become the norm in Moscow.

"We're back to square one. Who is Mr. Putin? Is it the same man or a new one? The answer is that it's a bit of both," said Boris Makarenko of Moscow's Centre for Political Technologies.

"He is wise and serious enough as a leader who has been in power a long time to see that the world and the country have changed. He is trying to adapt himself to the new situation here and abroad, and he's finding it hard to reinvent himself."

It may be that Putin aims to be the man for all seasons with a different face for each occasion.

Foreign investors who gathered at this week's investment forum in St Petersburg heard largely what they wanted to hear from Putin. There were promises of privatization, more protection of companies' rights and a crackdown on corruption.

The former KGB spy found a few minutes for a friendly chat with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, one of Moscow's sparring partners during the Soviet era.

He also spared time for meetings with heads of private equity funds and oil company chiefs, even if he annoyed some of them by turning up late.

"I feel more optimistic after leaving the room," said Christophe de Margerie, the CEO of French oil and gas company Total, welcoming Putin's assurance that foreign companies can take part in developing Russia's energy sector.

But for some veteran investors in Russia, the promises sounded too good to be true. Such people are all too familiar with the many unfulfilled reform promises in Putin's 12 years as president and prime minister.

"He was saying the right things to this audience, but the impact of those words is becoming less and less," said Roland Nash, chief investment strategist at Moscow-based hedge fund Verno Capital.

LOOKING EAST

Putin's meeting with Obama on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Mexico was widely seen as evidence that the return of the hawkish Putin to replace Dmitry Medvedev, his more liberal protege, would end the "reset" in Russian-U.S. relations.

U.S. officials said this was a superficial impression. But there was no avoiding the contrast with the friendliness at meetings between Putin and Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, which became known as "The George and Vladimir Show".

Putin, 59, has also been to China, France, Germany, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan since his inauguration on May 7.

The choice of Minsk as his first destination sent a shock wave through the diplomatic community. Putin had pulled out of a meeting of the Group of Eight industrial powers in the United States and Belarus is led by Alexander Lukashenko, who has been described as Europe's last dictator.

The decision sent a warning to the West - and a powerful signal to his domestic audience - that Putin was ready to snub Washington to show the importance of ties with a traditional ally that was once part of the Soviet empire.

He also went to Beijing to strengthen economic and defense ties before meeting Obama, suggesting Russia is now looking eastward more than westward for its economic development.

"The choice of where to go was very symbolic. You don't do such things by accident," said a diplomat based in Moscow.

Such grandstanding is typical of Putin and diplomats say he is not above a bit of one-upmanship to get a psychological advantage over his U.S. or European counterparts.

WORDS OR DEEDS?

Some of his actions inside Russia since his return to the presidency have also been typical of the man who ruled with a firm grip as president from 2000 until 2008.

Burnishing his macho image with antics such as bare-chested horse-riding, he reined in Russia's rebellious regions, defeated rebels in a war in the Chechnya region and clipped the wings of oligarchs who had amassed political power as well as wealth.

One of the first legislative acts of his new presidency was the passage of a law that drastically increased fines for protesters who violate public order, and police raided the homes of opposition leaders before a rally this month.

Yet on Thursday Putin said there was a place for protests, provided they were within the confines of the law. These are words that Putin would once never have been expected to say.

"I am convinced a democratic political system must not only guarantee the legitimacy of the authorities but people's confidence in its just nature to protect the interests of the majority. Nevertheless the interest of the minority must be taken into account and also reasonably protected," he said.

Like the foreign investors wary of counting on Putin's promises of economic reform, opposition leaders are skeptical about his remarks, noting that he had made clear he reserved the right to crack down if protesters step out of line.

"He can say whatever he wants but in fact his words and actions are clearly quite the opposite of each other, as the police are searching our homes. This is just rhetoric," said Gennady Gudkov, an opposition member of parliament.

But the message from aides is that Putin realizes the world's largest country - a nuclear superpower - has changed and that he must change with it.

"His speech (to investors) was addressed to people who understand that we are in a different shape. We have different goals now," said First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov.

"We are the same people and he is the same person in his third term, but the ambitions are different."

The question for protesters as well as investors is whether Putin acts on his promises or is merely paying lip service to what he thinks they, and foreign governments, want to hear.

"The key with Russian policy now is to see what they do as opposed to what they say," said Jim O'Neill, Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. "It's what he does that matters."
