As recession deepens across southern Europe, stories abound of indebted firms and households being forced to hand over ownership of their assets to their creditors.

The bottom line is that the government, the financial sector and the business sector collectively created a situation that leaves the financial sector with as good a result in terms of total debt collection as possible without the pain of sending most of the firms and many families into bankruptcy, unemployment and dispossession.

Thanks in good part to this tempered approach to debt write-down Iceland?s economy is now growing faster than most countries in Europe, and unemployment is less than 5% (having hit 9.3% in early 2010).

A New Jersey teenager left brain-damaged after being struck by a line drive off a metal bat while he was playing in a youth baseball game will receive $14.5 million to settle his lawsuit against the bat manufacturer, Little League Baseball and a sporting goods chain.

The settlement of Steven Domalewski's lawsuit was announced in state Superior Court on Wednesday morning in Passaic County. The boy, now 18, lives in Wayne, N.J. His family had claimed the metal bat was unsafe because baseballs could carom off it at much faster speeds than wooden bats.

"The Domalewskis are still saddened by the tragic events of June 2006, but this settlement provides them with some relief and comfort that Steven will get the care he needs for the rest of his life," said the family's attorney, Ernest Fronzuto. "He still can't perform any functions of daily life on his own."

Fronzuto said the settlement precluded him from discussing its details, including whether any of the defendants admitted liability.

Domalewski was pitching when the batter rocketed a line drive off the metal bat he was swinging.

The ball slammed into Steven's chest, just above his heart, knocking him backward. He clutched his chest, then made a motion to reach for the ball on the ground to pick it up and throw to first base to get the runner out.

But he never made it that far. The ball had struck his chest at the precise millisecond between heartbeats, sending him into cardiac arrest, according to his doctors. He crumpled to the ground and stopped breathing.

His father, Joseph, a teacher who had been on the sideline with the rest of the team, said he and a third base coach from the other team both ran onto the field, where Steven was already turning blue.

Someone yelled, "Call 911!" Within 90 seconds, a man trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation who had been playing catch with his 9-year-old daughter jumped over the fence and started to work on Steven.

Paramedics, who were a quarter-mile away doing a CPR demonstration, got to Steven within minutes, placed an oxygen mask over his face and rushed him to a hospital. But the damage had been done; his brain had been without oxygen for 15 to 20 minutes.

"Pretty much, he died," Joseph Domalewski said in a 2008 interview with The Associated Press. "It was just so fast. The thud, you could hear. When it hit him, that seemed to echo."

Domalewski was playing in a Police Athletic League game, but Little League was sued because the group certifies that specific metal bats are approved for ? and safe for ? use in games involving children.

Rick Redman, a spokesman for Hillerich and Bradsby, manufacturers of the Louisville Slugger brand bat, confirmed a settlement had been reached, but declined further comment.

An attorney representing The Sports Authority, the national sporting goods retailer, did not immediately return calls seeking comment, and an attorney who represented Little League Baseball in the case declined to comment.

Little League Baseball also did not immediately reply to messages left at its corporate headquarters.

Little League reached an agreement with the major manufacturers in the early 1990s to limit metal bats' performance to that of the best wooden bats. Little League said in 2008 that injuries to its pitchers fell from 145 a year before the accord was reached to the current level of about 20 to 30 annually.

Little League also said on its website that it has banned most metal bats for younger children for the 2012 season, although certain ones found to meet the organization's testing standards are allowed to be used. League divisions for older players can use metal bats subject to certain weight and size limits.

When Tupac Shakur rose from the stage in the California desert earlier this year, it was not only a jaw-dropping resurrection, but also the beginning of a new form of live entertainment.?

"Come with me," the digital Shakur called out, not just to tens of thousands of screaming fans but seemingly to other artists.?

Follow, they will. Elvis Presley's estate announced it has authorized holograms of the King of Rock, Marilyn Monroe's estate has expressed interest and there's no shortage of other beloved stars whose fans would die to see them perform again.

Advances in digital artistry make it all possible, presenting celebrity estates with new commercial and creative opportunities, but also some ethical quandaries.

"I think we've scratched the surface with Tupac," said Dylan Brown, a filmmaker who along with director Philip Atwell and effects studio Digital Domain helped bring the Shakur hologram to life. "If it's done tastefully, like Tupac was done tastefully, I think it could be a wonderful form of entertainment."

Brown, owner of The Yard Entertainment, and Atwell, owner of Geronimo Films, had each toyed with the idea of using holograms in concerts for a decade, but the technology wasn't there. Brown, who works closely with Snoop Dogg and Atwell, who collaborates with Dr. Dre, knew that once they chose Shakur for the holographic debut, it had to be more than just a technological marvel.

"We wanted to be really respectful of the family foremost," said Atwell. "We just wanted to do something that wasn't in bad taste."

Reaction to the Shakur hologram was huge, with the performance garnering 15 million YouTube hits within 48 hours and winning a top award at the creative marketing gathering Cannes Lions.

"You start to open up a whole new universe of legal questions," said Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer of Digital Domain, which is also working on the Presley holograms. "As such, we have no intentions of doing anything other than being utterly respectful of these legends and icons."

Because it's two-dimensional, the Shakur performer isn't a true hologram, which, by definition, is a 3-D image (Ulbrich notes the technology isn't quite there for that.). But it's a vivid digital creation that audiences are far more accustomed to seeing in movies ? except there is no screen.

Brown and Atwell say part of its challenge was integrating Shakur's performance into the larger show featuring Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and others.

Shakur's entry and exit had to be carefully planned to fit into the show, with the creators opting to have his image burst apart into a cloud of gold specks. Brown and Atwell said the dissolve seemed most appropriate. "He has a mystique and that aura that kind of transcends death even," Brown said.

Stars wield extensive control over how their names, voices and images are used after they die through likeness, trademark and copyright protections, and now holograms offer them yet another consideration.

Before digital filmmaking, attorney Laura Zwicker said the question for her clients boiled down to "Could you use my photograph?" Now, they have to consider whether they'll be returned to the big screen, inserted in commercials or put back on stage, said Zwicker a strategic wealth planner in the Los Angeles office of the firm Greenberg Glusker.

Celebrity likeness rights vary around the country, with stars' estates in California enjoying 70 years of protection. Indiana offers 100 years and 16 other states have laws protecting celebrities' likenesses, said Jeremiah Reynolds, an attorney with the firm Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump and Aldisert. The firm handles numerous intellectual property issues, including those related to Michael Jackson's estate.

While holograms are likely covered by existing laws, potential legal challenges will likely focus on whether the performance is protected by the First Amendment. "You get into very subjective areas about what is artistic," Reynolds said.

Marilyn Monroe's estate threatened legal action earlier this year against a company claiming it was working on a digital show using the model-actress' likeness. The technology for holograms or other digital performances are intriguing, the estate's handlers at Authentic Brands say, but they would only partner with people who could make a top-notch product.

Brown and Atwell said they felt enormous pressure to make sure the Shakur performance was worthy of being an introduction to a new form of live entertainment.

"I also hope that the people who do follow us do it with the same care and the same sense of dedication because I would hate to see a bad version of Marilyn Monroe, a bad version of Elvis up there," Brown said.

Brown and Atwell are proud that Shakur is leading the hologram revolution.

"We're part of the hip hop generation," Brown said. "It shows the growth of that culture, of that business and it says a lot about what we've dedicated part of our lives to."

"There was a time, 15 years ago, 20 years ago, when people were waiting for hip hop to disappear," he said. "Now not only is hip hop here to stay, even if you die we'll bring you back."

Because it isn?t always ?good.? This is how life works ? ebb and flow. Everything is always changing. Always.

And when things are bad, it?s very easy to forget how good ?good? felt. It?s very easy to think that good never existed in the first place, even though ?good days? happen just as consistently, if not more so, than bad days.

Of course, this isn?t to say we have no control over our ?good days? or ?bad days.? In fact, we do have an incredible amount of control. We have control over our reactions, just not our circumstances.

This is why ?failure is good? can sound so empty. Because failure doesn?t feel good.

It hurts. Bad. It?s that knife in your gut that is continually twisting. It?s the nights you roll around, tossing and turning with anxious energy coursing through your veins, only to wake up the next day with a headache and a full schedule.

Failure is one of the worst feelings there is. And it?s funny, sometimes you psych yourself up to do something that is out of your comfort zone. You say, ?what?s the worst that could happen??

And then you do it and fail, and realize the ?worst that could happen? actually hurts pretty bad.

There?s no use pretending failure doesn?t hurt. Now, let?s look at this statement again: failure is good.

When you succeed, what happens? You feel good. You feel great. You feel motivated.

Motivated to do what? To risk failure.

Why? Because failure is the only way you can succeed.

When you succeed, you learn a lot. But when you fail, you?re forced to come to terms with your worldview. You have to analyze exactly why something didn?t work. In many cases, you need to rip apart old beliefs and ideas in order to make way for the overwhelming evidence that yes, you were wrong.

When you succeed, it?s more like, ?see, I told you so.?

Feels good to succeed. But life happens when you fail. When you had all your emotional eggs resting on one outcome, which fails miserably. Then all your emotional eggs break and you have to, well? lay new ones.

That?s painful. But you come out new and improved. Literally, new and fresh. You have a new mindset, a new determination, and the ability to see the world in a way you couldn?t before ? the ability to avoid mistakes you didn?t even know existed last time.

I remember when I first got into making money online. I wanted a way to pay for college without having a full-time job. Actually, I wanted to go to college to learn online business, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone.

I even had my whole life planned out ? I would move to Toronto with my sites paying the way. I would live a life of absolute financial freedom, receiving a check in the mail every month.

But what would?ve really happened had I succeeded? I would?ve had a handful of sites generating me income? for about five months. And then the Mayday Update would?ve struck, decimating my entire source of income.

Looking back, I feel that would?ve hurt even worse than failing ? since I would?ve had a taste of the lifestyle I wanted, then had it ripped away.

But that?s really beside the point. The point is, without my miserable failure, I would?ve never had success. It?s because failure always precedes success. Always.

With that in mind, failure is always good.

?

But it still doesn?t feel that way. What can we do about it?

?

Coping with Failure

?

It?s one thing to know failure leads to success. But how do you deal with it while you?re going through it? After all, there is always a choice. With failure, you can choose to learn from your mistakes and keep going forward, or you can give up.

?

And that?s real failure, because instead of learning your lessons and getting that much closer to success, you?ve made success impossible by giving up.

?

So how do we get through failure? How do we deal with the pain and get motivated to try something new, to keep going forward?

?

Detachment

?

We love success. We love good days. We love that feeling of being on top of the world. We want it all the time.

?

But it doesn?t happen all the time. So this puts us ?out of sync.? We want something that we don?t have, causing negative feelings.?

?

The problem is, you can have a great success, but then within a week be an emotional wreck. How? You loved success so much you wanted it all the time. But now that you?re back ?in the grind,? you?re not getting that kind of success every day.?

?

And why should you be? Success is the result of a buildup. If you?re not building up to anything, why should you experience success? Why should you expect to get that feeling every day?

?

The key is to detach yourself from that outcome. Success feels fantastic. When you succeed, feel it fully. But the next day, wake up and get back to work. No, it?s not worse than succeeding, it?s simply different.

?

Realize success is not better than failure. In fact, logically, failure is always better than success, since you learn from failure, where success simply provides you motivation to get over the next hurdle.

?

And while I?m going on about this, don?t let the idea of failure/success get you down. There will always be both. But that doesn?t have to be a bad thing, unless you make it so by attaching to one or the other.

What Would your Friends Say?

In theory, detachment is the best way to deal with failure, as you move from being the participant to the observer. Instead of ?failing,? you?re observing what it feels like to fail.

There?s actually a big difference.

But that?s not always practical. When your stomach is twisting into millions of tiny knots and your sweating in a perfectly climate-controlled environment, it?s difficult to think of detachment. So that?s something to practice.

?

But what can you do right now? Well, one useful tool you can use to get through failure is viewing your problems through the eyes of your friends.

?

Have you ever gone through an emotional breakup? Have you ever had a breakup bring you down so low that you thought there was nothing more to life, that you were living but it was over?

What happened when you told your friends? They probably said something like, ?you?ll find someone else,? or ?there are plenty of fish in the sea!??

You?d be right. But for a second, realize what it?s like from their perspective. You just went through a life catastrophe, but it really didn?t ruin your life. You?re still a human. You still have just as many options for success as you did before.

Your friends are treating it like it isn?t a big deal because it really isn?t. As you?re wallowing around in your own mind, your friends are seeing life how it is: continuous.

What if you could view your own problems and failures in this way? What if you could see them through the eyes of your friends (or mentor, or parent, etc)?

You get rejected via cold call, you view it as failure. But others view it as success. How? They can look at your life objectively. While you view it as failure, they view it as success, because they realize that you?ve pushed past your comfort zone and will learn a lot from failure. As long as you keep going, you?ll be better for it.

When failure is always a good thing, it makes no sense to beat yourself up about it. And this is, at the end of the day, all we need to worry about ? our own opinions on our own actions.

Because failure doesn?t feel like failure unless we make it. We are the ones causing our own pain. No one else is. Comedy legend Phyllis Diller dies at 95

Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95, her agent confirmed to NBC News.

"She was a true pioneer," Fred Wostbrock said. "The first female stand-up comedian. She paved the way for everybody. She paved the way for Joan Rivers, Ellen DeGeneres, Chelsea Handler. Phyllis was the first of the first. The first female to play Vegas ... she was on Broadway, she made movies.?She did it all."

Her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press, "She died peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face."

According to E!, her son Perry found her. She is also survived by two daughters.

Diller suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999. The cause of her death has not been released.

"I'm beyond saddened by the death of Phyllis Diller," comedian Joan Rivers posted on Twitter. "We were friends - Melissa and I had a wonderful time with her at lunch just a month ago.

"The only tragedy is that Phyllis Diller was the last from an era that insisted a woman had to look funny in order to be funny," Rivers tweeted. "If she had started today, Phyllis could have stood there in Dior and Harry Winston and become the major star that she was. I adored her!"

"Phyllis Diller was not only a great comedienne but her memorable teaming with Bob Hope brought female comics to the forefront," said comedian Don Rickles. "Her life was filled with goodness and she deserved the respect she received. ?She will be missed."

She was a staple of nightclubs and television from the 1950s ? when female comics were rare indeed ? until her retirement in 2002. Diller built her stand-up act around the persona of the corner-cutting housewife ("I bury a lot of my ironing in the back yard") with bizarre looks, a wardrobe to match (by "Omar of Omaha") and a husband named "Fang."

Wrote Time magazine in 1961: "Onstage comes something that, by its own description, looks like a sackful of doorknobs. With hair dyed by Alcoa, pipe-cleaner limbs and knees just missing one another when the feet are wide apart, this is not Princess Volupine. It is Phyllis Diller, the poor man's Auntie Mame, only successful female among the New Wave comedians and one of the few women funny and tough enough to belt out a 'standup' act of one-line gags."

"I was one of those life-of-the-party types," Diller told The Associated Press in 1965. "You'll find them in every bridge club, at every country club. People invited me to parties only because they knew I would supply some laughs. They still do."

In 1992 she received the American Comedy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Diller didn't get into comedy until she was nearly 40, after her first husband, Sherwood Diller, prodded her for two years to give up a successful career as an advertising and radio writer. Through it all, she was also a busy mother.

"We had five kids at the time. I don't how he thought we'd handle that," she told the AP in 2006.

A Chicago Tribune columnist, describing her appearance at a nightspot there in 1958, noted she was from San Francisco, hailed her as "the weirdest, wildest yet" ? and made sure to mention her five youngsters.

Her husband managed her career until the couple's 25-year marriage fell apart in the 1960s. Shortly after her divorce she married entertainer Warde Donovan, but they separated within months.

Through both marriages and other relationships, the foibles of "Fang" remained an integral part of her act.

"Fang is permanent in the act, of course," she once said. "Don't confuse him with my real husbands. They're temporary."

She also appeared in movies, including "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number" and "Eight on the Lam" with Bob Hope.

In 1966-67, she was the star of an ABC sitcom about a society family trying to stave off bankruptcy, "The Pruitts of Southampton." Gypsy Rose Lee played a nosy neighbor. In 1968, she was host of a short-lived variety series, "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show."

But standup comedy was her first love, and when she broke into the business in 1956 it was a field she had largely to herself because female comics weren't widely accepted then.

Although she could be serious during interviews, sooner or later a joke would pop out, often as not followed by that outrageous "AH-HHAAAAAAAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA!" laugh.

"It's my real laugh," she once said. "It's in the family. When I was a kid my father called me the laughing hyena."

Her looks were a frequent topic, and she did everything she could to accentuate them ? negatively. She wore outrageous fright wigs and deliberately shopped for stage shoes that made her legs look as skinny as possible.

"The older I get, the funnier I get," she said in 1961. "Think what I'll save in not having my face lifted."

She felt different about plastic surgery later, though, and her face, and other body parts, underwent a remarkable transformation. Efforts to be beautiful became a mainstay of her act.

Commenting in 1995 about the repainting of the Hollywood sign, she cracked, "It took 300 gallons, almost as much as I put on every morning." She said her home "used to be haunted, but the ghosts haven't been back since the night I tried on all my wigs."

She recovered from a 1999 heart attack with the help of a pacemaker, but finally retired in 2002, saying advancing age was making it too difficult for her to spend several weeks a year on the road.

"I have energy, but I don't have lasting energy," she told The Associated Press in 2006. "You have to know your limitations."

After retiring from standup, Diller continued to take occasional small parts in movies and TV shows ("Family Guy") and pursued painting as a serious hobby. She published her autobiography, "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse," in 2005. The 2006 film "Goodnight, We Love You" documented her career.

Her other books included "Phyllis Diller's Housekeeping Hints" and "Phyllis Diller's Marriage Manual."

When she turned 90 in July 2007, she fractured a bone in her back and was forced to cancel a planned birthday appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." But it didn't stop her from wisecracking: "I still take the pill 'cause I don't want any more grandchildren."

Born Phyllis Driver in Lima, Ohio, in 1917, she married Sherwood Diller right out of school (Bluffton College) and was a housewife for several years before getting outside work.

She was working as an advertising writer for a radio station when a comedy turn at San Francisco's Purple Onion nightclub launched her toward stardom.

She made her network TV debut as a contestant on Groucho Marx's game show, "You Bet Your Life." (Diller, asked if she was married: "Yes, I've worn a wedding ring for 18 years." Marx: "Really? Well, two more payments and it'll be all yours.")

She credited the self-help book, "The Magic of Believing" by Claude M. Bristol, with giving her the courage to enter the business. For decades she would recommend it to aspiring entertainers, even buying it for them sometimes.

"Don't get me wrong, though," she said in a 1982 interview that threatened to turn serious. "I'm a comic. I don't deal with problems when I'm working."
