The screen on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is, in my opinion, one of its greatest features. Aside from being capable of producing absolutely stunning colors, the display is large enough to really enjoy a movie on when waiting in line somewhere. This is obviously not going to work for everyone, in fact for some the Galaxy S3 is barely pocketable. To help reach that audience, Samsung has announced plans to release a 4? Galaxy S3 Mini in Europe.
Samsung Mobile Communications head, JK Shin, spoke briefly on the device. He noted that while the device is called mini, Samsung did not feel it was an entry level device. The 4? Super AMOLED screen with an 800 x 480 resolution and dual core 1GHz processor disagree with Mr. Shin. This HSPA+ device also takes a hit in both the front and rear cameras, offering a VGA front facing and a 5MP rear instead of the 1.9MP FFC and 8MP rear camera found on the Galaxy S3. This will be the first Samsung device to be released with Android 4.1 on board, but in nearly every other way this is a step down from the Galaxy S3.
Samsung is expected to release the device for 399 euros (US$500), and currently there are no plans to bring the Galaxy S3 mini to the US. Samsung is leveraging the new found brand recognition due to the popularity of the Galaxy S3 to fill a gap in the market, where they feel there are users that are less interested in the largest and most powerful phone out there. It could certainly be argued that the same market gap exists in other parts of the world, but for now this device is being announced in Europe only.
