Golf-Poulter finishes with five straight birdies for key win

MEDINAH, Illinois, Sept 29 | Sun Sep 30, 2012 1:21am BST

MEDINAH, Illinois, Sept 29 (Reuters) - England's Ian Poulter ran off five birdies in a row to give Europe victory in the final fourball match on Saturday and keep alive hopes of a Ryder Cup miracle at Medinah.

Poulter's sensational finish gave him and his playing partner, world number one Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, a one up win over Americans Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner to send the Europeans into the final day 10-6 behind after they trailled by six points late in the day.

The Americans dominated early and threatened to turn the event into a rout before the fight back that ended in twilight made it a four-point deficit, matching the record margin overcome by the U.S. team 13 years ago at Brookline.

"We needed to get something going," said Poulter, who always seems to play his best golf in the cauldron of Ryder Cup pressure. "We had to make birdies and wow, five in a row. It was awesome."

Poulter, who has won all three of his matches in this 39th Ryder Cup to improve his overall record to 11-3-0 in the biennial competition, rolled in a 15-foot putt at the last hole for a birdie that matched Dufner's and gave Europe the full point.

Ten minutes earlier, Englishman Luke Donald and Spaniard Sergio Garcia held off a charge by Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker to hold on to a one up win in the penultimate match.

Donald birdied three of the last five holes, while Woods helped the Americans come back from a four-hole deficit with four birdies in five holes from the 13th. Stricker lipped out a seven-foot putt at the 18th that would have halved the match.

"It was huge," Europe captain Jose Maria Olazabal said about the finish. "That keeps us (in with) a chance. It's been done before in the past. Tomorrow is going to be a big day." (Editing by Julian Linden)

Support for LGBT Military Families - The DC Center

gaymilitarypartners.jpgThe American Military Partner Association (www.MilitaryPartners.org) is the nation's premier support and resource network for the partners/spouses of LGBT servicemembers and veterans. Launched originally in 2009 as the "Campaign for Military Partners" by Servicemembers United, America's gay military organization, this first-of-its-kind initiative grew substantially over the course of the ensuing two years and graduated to become the American Military Partner Association on September 20, 2011 - the day that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law was officially repealed.

Throughout the years of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, gay and lesbian servicemembers were forced to either forego a relationship and a family or go to great lengths to hide their relationships in order to continue to serve in the armed forces. This situation rendered the committed civilian partners of gay and lesbian servicemembers virtually invisible. They could not be acknowledged, they could not be brought to unit or military functions, they could not access spouse and family support networks, and they were denied the family readiness services made available to the spouses and partners of heterosexual troops. This isolation was always particularly devastating when same-sex couples had to move together to rural posts and bases and especially when the active duty servicemember was deployed overseas.

It is this disadvantaged plight that motivated Servicemembers United and the American Military Partner Association to step up back in 2009 and begin to serve this underserved - and often ignored - part of our American military family. In the true historic tradition of military spouses pulling together and figuring out how to support one another on their own during World War II and the Vietnam era, the American Military Partner Association began as an effort to identify, connect, support, and recognize the often ignored and frequently isolated civilian partners of gay and lesbian military personnel. Founded by Servicemembers United in 2009 as a project called the Campaign for Military Partners, the initiative grew to include hundreds and hundreds of military partners across the country and even across the world.

The American Military Partner Association has also worked tirelessly to spread the word about the existence and unique needs of the partners of gay and lesbian servicemembers. Dozens of stories were successfully pitched to major national media outlets, resulting in a national spotlight being continuously shown on these silent heroes for the first time in American history. But simply drawing the public's attention to the plight of isolated and under-supported military partners was only the start of how we have been helping military partners for more than two years.

The American Military Partner Association launched and maintains the website MilitaryPartners.org as the internet's premier information resource for the partners of gay and lesbian servicemembers. We have engaged in a systematic outreach campaign to military partners in order to let them know about our organization and the resources and network now available to them and to make them start to finally feel like a welcomed part of the wider gay and lesbian military community. After proactively building up a membership, we conducted a first-ever survey of military partners in order to identify and explore the unique needs, challenges, and issues they face on a regular basis. This information was aggregated and analyzed, and it formed the basis of an informative, one-of-a-kind report on gay and lesbian military partner and couple issues submitted by Servicemembers United to the Comprehensive Review Working Group on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Sony ties up with Olympus, takes 11 percent stake

TOKYO (AP) ? Sony and Olympus have agreed on a business alliance that will see Sony Corp. invest 50 billion yen ($640 million) for an 11 percent stake in the embattled medical equipment and camera company.

Olympus Corp. has been on shaky ground after its British chief executive turned whistleblower and helped unearth a scandal involving a systematic cover-up of massive losses.

The deal, announced Friday, was widely expected as Sony president Kazuo Hirai had expressed interest in such a move as part of a turnaround at the Japanese electronics and entertainment company. Sony has reported losses for four straight years.

The two companies said they will set up a company together later this year, 51 percent owned by Sony and the rest by Olympus, to work on new businesses.

German Jewish leader deters racist attack with gun

A leading member of Germany's Jewish community had to point to a gun he was carrying to ward off a young man shouting anti-Semitic abuse, the latest in a string of racist incidents in Berlin that has shocked Jews and city authorities.

The Central Council of Jews in Germany said its general secretary, Michael Kramer, had endured a barrage of threatening insults from the man after leaving a Berlin synagogue with his two daughters on Wednesday.

"The man threatened us and made clear he would have lashed out if the children had not been there," the council quoted Kramer, 44, as saying on its website.

Kramer then pointed to a gun he is allowed to carry for his personal protection to deter the man from attacking him.

Germany's top-selling Bild newspaper carried a photograph of the young man that Kramer himself had taken at the time with his mobile phone. The man, with a partially shaven head, has an arm raised towards the phone as though about to push Kramer.

Bild quoted the man as having said to Kramer: "What are you doing here? Go back to where you came from."

Both Kramer and his adversary are pressing charges against each other, German media said.

Last month, one of the first rabbis ordained in Germany since the Holocaust, Daniel Alter, was beaten up on a Berlin street in front of his young daughter by four attackers, prompting a seminary to advise its students to avoid wearing skullcaps in public.

Germany's official Jewish population, now at around 120,000, has grown more than 10-fold in the last 20 years, thanks largely to an influx of Jews from the former Soviet Union, but anti-Semitic attacks are commonplace and policemen guard synagogues around the clock.

Egypt's president heads to Turkey to build on ties

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi travels to Turkey on Sunday to strengthen an emerging alliance between two moderate Islamist governments in a region beset by conflict and instability.

Even though Morsi has only been in power for a few months, there are already strong signs a partnership with Turkey is forming, evidenced by a common effort to end Syria's civil war by urging the exit of President Bashar Assad from power.

Earlier this month, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the Egyptian capital Cairo and pledged $2 billion in aid to boost confidence in an economy badly battered by a tourism slump, strikes and ongoing protests since the fall of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in an uprising last year.

During the 12-hour visit, Morsi will try to strengthen economic ties with Turkey ? a country his Muslim Brotherhood group views as an Islamist success story, mixing a strong economy with Western ties and Islamic piety.

Turkey, a NATO member with a mostly Muslim, but not Arab, population, has been touted as a democratic model for Egypt and other Arab countries swept up in popular revolts over the past two years.

After initially looking to the Turkish ruling party as a role model, the Islamic fundamentalist Brotherhood in Egypt has cooled to the idea because of Turkey's strong secular leanings. Morsi and the Brotherhood, on the contrary, have been criticized by their opponents for pushing a more conservative Islamist line, particularly in drafting the country's new constitution.

"Before the revolution, we saw (Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip) Erdogan's regime ... as a successful model that can be emulated," said Dina Zakaria, a member of the foreign relations committee of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. "But can it be with all its details and can it all suit Egyptian society? Of course not."

Turkish officials and media have voiced enthusiasm for the relationship with Cairo after the uprising. Turkish President Abdullah Gul was the first foreign leader to visit Egypt after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011, meeting with both the largely liberal and secular youth groups that spearheaded the pro-democracy revolt as well as with generals from the ruling military council who took over from Mubarak and then eventually transferred power to the democratically elected Morsi.

Erdogan got a warm welcome in Cairo last year, with crowds of Brotherhood supporters lining the airport road upon his arrival, some of them carrying banners reading: "Erdogan is a hero."

Erdogan has encouraged Egypt to mimic the Turkish model of governance.

But Zakaria said that after frequent visits to Turkey and meetings with different groups there, she is convinced Egyptian society would not accept Turkey's secular constitution.

Many in conservative Egypt equate the term secularism with "anti-Islam." As efforts to draft the country's constitution are marred by disputes over what many liberals perceive as overtly Islamist clauses in the charter, Zakaria ruled out drawing inspiration from the Turkish constitution.

"Their constitution won't work here in Egypt," she said. "There are things Egyptian people won't accept," she added, referring mainly to the separation of religion and he state.

One of the founding principles of Turkey's constitution is that it is a secular democracy, something that contradicts Egypt's old constitution, and is not even considered in the writing of the new charter. Debate remains in Egypt over whether to keep the current charter, which cites the principles of Islamic law as the basis of legislation, or to harden it to include a reference to specific Islamic laws which would guide all legislation.

But when it comes to foreign affairs and economics, there is much that Egypt can gain from Turkey's experience, Zakaria said.

Certainly on the international stage, Cairo and Ankara have much in common. Both want Assad of Syria to quit and Iran, his ally, to stay out of the civil war there. Ankara and Cairo have teamed as part of a regional initiative to try to solve the Syrian crisis, an effort that could form a strong foundation of future cooperation.

"Turkey couldn't do anything alone when it comes to Syria. One hand alone won't clap," Zakaria said. "What is clear now is that the two countries need to have strong relations because we have serious regional problems and we need each other."

Mustafa Ellabbad, an Egyptian expert on Turkish relations, said Turkey wants an Arab partner in its bid for regional influence in the Middle East and its affiliation with the Brotherhood would serve as a foundation for a moderate Islamist alliance. The Brotherhood, in return, looks to Turkey for assistance as a bridge to the West. But for some of Egypt's more radical Islamists, "the Turkish model doesn't even deserve to be labeled Islamic," Ellabbad said.

But Morsi could turn to Turkey for help on other domestic issues, chief among them the economy. He has already visited Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, China, Iran, Italy and Belgium before his recent trip to New York, where he addressed the U.N. General Assembly. His frequent travels have raised criticism that he is paying more attention to foreign policy issues than domestic problems. However, the economic issues appear high on the agenda on most of his foreign trips.

"The economic portfolio is certainly one of the most important ones between Egypt and Turkey," Yasser Ali, the presidential spokesman, said Saturday.

Egypt's economy is faltering under the weight of shrinking foreign investment and numerous labor strikes demanding better wages and representation in state-owned companies. The political system remains far from stable, and a referendum on a new constitution and new parliamentary elections that will follow that will test the performance of the Brotherhood's Islamist politics.

This is where Morsi may turn to Turkey for inspiration.

Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, or AKP, has had an extraordinary record of electoral success and longevity, coming to power in 2002 amid economic hardship and a fractured political landscape, and then comfortably winning general elections again in 2007 and 2011.

Zakaria could not confirm local media reports that the AKP provided assistance to the Brotherhood's political party ahead of Egypt's parliamentary elections last year. Brotherhood officials told Egyptian media that the party's local branch in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, signed a partnership deal with the AKP in Istanbul, ahead of last winter's parliamentary elections.

Morsi is also expected to attend the annual congress of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party, a first for an Egyptian leader, and is invited to attend an economic forum organized by the Turkish chamber of commerce on Sunday.

Hassan Malek, a prominent businessman from the Muslim Brotherhood traveling to Turkey with Morsi, said there is much that Egypt can learn from Turkey in the fields of manufacturing, industry and trade zones. He said Egypt could particularly benefit in the fields of manufacturing apparel, and electronics.

Egypt's Minister of Economic Cooperation Ashraf el-Araby told local media that a committee at the level of prime ministers will be formed to push economic cooperation, including opening the African market for both countries. Trade between the two countries has already reached $3.8 billion in the first nine months of 2012, a 27 percent increase compared to the same period last year, said Turkey's ambassador to Egypt Hussein Awny. He estimated the figure could rise to reach $5 billion by the end of the year.

"It is not hidden that there is a meeting of minds. Geographically we are close, we have similar visions," Malek said. "This is a new opportunity. There are many things in the Turkish experience we can transfer and benefit from. But we can't copy everything."

Chevron pays $17M fine for oil spill off Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Chevron Corp. has paid a multimillion-dollar fine for several "irregularities" in connection with last year's oil spill off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's National Petroleum Agency said.

The agency said in a Thursday statement that Chevron paid the 35.1 million real ($17.3 million) fine last week for 24 of 25 irregularities detected. The statement did not provide details on the irregularities.

Some 155,000 gallons of crude are thought to have been released in the November 2011 spill.

The agency said it granted Chevron a 30 percent discount because it paid the fine on time and did not challenge it.

Chevron confirmed it paid the fine and said it will "implement a number of process improvements developed from lessons learned in the incident. Chevron Brasil respects and complies with the laws of the countries in which it operates."

The company said in a Friday statement that "continuous monitoring of the incident area shows no discernible environmental impact to marine life or human health."

Also on Friday, Brazil's state-run oil company, Petroleo Brasileiro SA, said it filed a suit in federal court asking for the suspension of an injunction ordering driller Transocean Ltd. to cease operations in Brasil until investigations into the spill are completed.

The company said in a statement that the suspension would hurt Petrobras' exploration activities since it is currently using seven Transocean rigs in Brazil.

Earlier this week, Transocean and Chevron were served injunctions ordering them to suspend operations in Brazil within 30 days.

Jennifer R. Hubbard: Speaking the language

I was talking with some people today about how many words in the English language are specialized; they're only used by small fractions of the population. Like "odontoblast," "jabiru," and "gallet," from the worlds of dentistry, ornithology, and masonry, respectively. Many occupations have their own special languages. Geologists might talk about chert, gneiss, and the vadose zone, while doctors speak of tachycardia, cyanosis, and the corpus callosum. In fact, that's one of the difficult parts about writing characters who share a profession if you're an outsider to that profession: getting the language right, whether your setting is a hospital, a restaurant kitchen, a military base, a police station, or a dance studio. (The other challenge is to keep it intelligible to those readers who are not insiders.)

Writers of books for children and teens can often skip this problem, because our characters usually don't have these occupational vocabularies. But sometimes our characters do live in specialized worlds--if they're Olympic gymnasts, for example. And of course there are other vocabulary issues, like slang and regionalisms.

Another challenge in getting the vocabulary right is in writing historical novels. I'm always fascinated by novels written in the 1920s, with the characters' references to "flivvers" and "runabouts" and "berries" and "brilliantine," and the frequency with which the phrase, "I'll tell the world!" is uttered. A time traveler from the early 1920s would be puzzled by our references to "surfing the web" or "texting" or "TiVo," not to mention "MRIs," "in vitro fertilization," or even "penicillin."

What "language" do your characters speak?

Probability maps help sniff out food contamination

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Uncovering the sources of fresh food contamination could become faster and easier thanks to analysis done at Sandia National Laboratories' National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC).

The study, in the International Journal of Critical Infrastructures, demonstrates how developing a probability map of the food supply network using stochastic network representation might shorten the time it takes to track down contaminated food sources.

Stochastic mapping shows what is known about how product flows through the distribution supply chain and provides a means to express all the uncertainties in potential supplier-customer relationships that persist due to incomplete information.

If used on a larger scale, such methods also might assess the vulnerability of food supplies to wide-scale, deliberate contamination.

Tracking down the source of fresh food contamination can be difficult and time-consuming. Stephen Conrad (6924) says difficulties in adequately characterizing connections and product flows among producers, distributors and suppliers can contribute to significant uncertainty in assessing the risk of foodborne illness.

"This is often a serious problem when there is an outbreak of food poisoning in a particular region and the healthcare authorities cannot quickly trace the source of the outbreak," Stephen says.

When an outbreak occurs, epidemiologists must interview affected people to track down where foodborne exposures happened. Often those interviews take place weeks after the exposure, leading to inaccurate or incomplete information and making it difficult to pinpoint a likely food culprit. Once the tainted food has been identified, investigators must trace up through the food distribution supply chain to locate the source of contamination.

"Epidemiologists involved in trace back start behind the eight ball," Stephen says. "They attempt to reconstruct the pathway the contaminated food has traveled through the distribution network well after the fact."

Even at the supply chain level, investigating how food moves through the system is daunting. Stephen says supply chains vary widely from one food marketing system and agricultural sector to another. Some supply chain parts change frequently. Even within a single agricultural sector, some parts of the food supply chain may be characterized by enduring supplier/customer relationships, while others may be market-based and highly transitory.

Even industry insiders may not understand the supply chain map. Many only know "one up and one down" -- that is, they know only their direct supplier and direct customer. Some information about customers and suppliers can be proprietary and therefore hard to get, Stephen says.

In 2011, sprouts were the focus of a serious E. coli outbreak in Europe, but tracing contaminated products to their source proved difficult.

Sandia researchers applied the stochastic mapping technique to test data from the fresh sprout sector in a single state in the U.S., using a case study of the edible seed sprout distribution system as the basis of their computational model.

"Stochastic network representation provides the ability to incorporate and express the uncertainties using probability maps," Conrad explained. "The method enables effective risk analysis and designing robust food defense strategies."

Future work for the team will include scaling the analysis up to the company or industry level as well as mapping commodity flows into, out of and within a geographic region.

Ultimately, NISAC intends to work with partners in business and federal and state agencies to ascertain whether the agencies have a business case for adopting the method.

If there is, the team will seek to help achieve wide acceptance of using data analysis to assess risk.

Building on techniques and knowledge developed at NISAC over the past four years, the work was initiated with funding from Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program and continued with funding from the Department of Homeland Security.

"If stochastic mapping was widely used now, perhaps outbreaks, such the recent ones involving salmonella, could be more quickly tracked down and contained. Quicker containment would benefit not only consumers but also the farmers who grow fresh food for our nation and who can be severely impacted economically by uncertainties and market restrictions on sales of their products caused by delays in pinpointing an outbreak's source," Stephen says.

For more information, visit Complex Adaptive Systems of Systems (CASoS) Engineering Initiative website, or the National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC).

The International Journal of Critical Infrastructures article, "The value of utilizing stochastic mapping of food distribution networks for understanding risks and tracing contaminant pathways," written by Conrad, W.E. Beyeler and T.J. Brown, appeared in Volume 8 of the 2012 publication.

Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin company, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. With main facilities in Albuquerque, N.M., and Livermore, Calif., Sandia has major R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies and economic competitiveness.

Seahawk stun Packers on controversial finish

On disputed play where receiver, DB both have hands on ball, Seattle wins 14-12

Image: Green Bay Packers v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images

Referees make conflicting signals as Seattle receiver Golden Tate fights for the ball on what was called a touchdown catch against the Packers on Monday night.

updated 1:50 a.m. ET Sept. 25, 2012

SEATTLE - In a bizarre ending that capped a brutal weekend for replacement officials, the Seattle Seahawks somehow beat the Green Bay Packers 14-12 on Monday night in a game that's certain to re-ignite frustrations over the locked-out refs.

Russell Wilson threw a disputed 24-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on the final play of the game, a game that finally ended 10 minutes later when both teams were brought back on the field for the extra point.

Wilson scrambled from the pocket and threw to the corner of the end zone as the clock expired. Tate shoved Green Bay's Sam Shields out of the way, then wrestled with M.D. Jennings for possession. It was ruled on the field as a touchdown and after a lengthy review, referee Wayne Elliott came out from under the hood and announced "the ruling on the field stands" and CenturyLink Field erupted in celebration.

It was nearly 10 minutes before the teams were brought back for the extra point.

The final decision is only going to fuel debate about the replacement officials coming off a weekend filled with disputed calls.

"Don't ask me a question about the officials," Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said. "I've never seen anything like that in all my years in football.

"I know it's been a wild weekend in the NFL and I guess we're part of it now."

And the last game of the weekend will debated more than any other.

Seattle (2-1) won its second straight, while Green Bay (1-2) and saw its streak of wins in six straight road openers snapped.

Wilson's heave came at the end of a final frantic drive after Seattle had previously missed on a fourth-down attempt from the Green Bay 7 with 2 minutes left. The turnover on downs appeared to end Seattle's hopes and cap an impressive second-half comeback by the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, who was sacked eight times ? all in the first half.

Green Bay averted disaster when John Kuhn fumbled on the Packers first play following the change of possession but center Jeff Saturday recovered. The Seahawks held and forced Green Bay to punt from the 4 with 57 seconds left. The 41-yard punt set Seattle up at the Green Bay 46 with 46 seconds remaining.

Wilson hit Sidney Rice for 22 yards on a slant then went for Tate in the end zone but the ball was batted away with 18 seconds left. He threw over the head of Evan Moore on second down leaving 12 seconds remaining and missed Tate again at the 5.

Wilson took the final snap with 8 seconds remaining. He appeared to be looking for Rice on the right side of the end zone, but rolled left and threw for Tate, who was in a crowd of three Packers defenders. His shove of Shields was obvious and it was never clear who had possession between Tate and Jennings.

Seattle instantly celebrated while the Packers argued with anyone in a striped shirt. Both teams were eventually shoved to the sidelines as Tate stomped through the end zone in celebration. Following the review, Elliott's announcement sent the stadium into delirium and even more confusion ensued until the teams finally returned to the field for the extra point.

"From what I understood from the officials it was a simultaneous catch. Tie goes to the runner. Good call," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said.

Rodgers had quite a different opinion.

"It was awful. Just look at the replay. And then the fact that it was reviewed, it was awful," he said. "That's all I'm going to say about it.

"We shouldn't have been in that position.

It was Tate's second touchdown of the game after catching a 41-yard TD in the second quarter to give Seattle a 7-0 lead. He finished with three catches for 68 yards, while Wilson was 10 of 21 for 130 yards.

The Packers' frustration was almost instant. Guard T.J. Lang was even more emphatic, tweeting that the Packers were robbed "by the refs. Thanks NFL."

Green Bay shook off a disastrous first half where Rodgers was sacked eight times and completely controlled possession in the final 30 minutes. Green Bay ran 41 offensive plays in the second half, got field goals of 29 and 40 yards from Mason Crosby and Cedric Benson's 1-yard TD run with 8:44 left to take a 12-7 lead.

Others spoke their mind by tweeting.

Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman tweeted "These games are a joke," while NBA MVP LeBron James tweeted "I simply just LOVE the NFL to much to see these mistakes. I'm sick like I just played for the Packers".

Small Business Communication

Time to get your business going! You've got your computer, you've set up your website, your domain name has been registered with GoDaddy or other domain service, you've got your web hosting going with HostGator or other hosting service. Now what's next?

It's time to get that phone system up and running. as some of you already know I am a fan of Google Voice because it is completely free and for my business it works great for me. However, in some instances of business a more technologically advanced system is needed.

Today I am going to give you an inside look at a system that is an industry leader. As we all know, starting a small business can be quite expensive. However, if you have the time to sit back and research your options you can find many deals. I have taken the first step for you and will provide you the basics of this system. I believe it's a system that is definitely worth your time to research.

Ring Central is a powerful system that allows communications by using a local number or one freephone. The basis of the system is centralization of the one line which has extensions that keep the business and employees connected wherever they are in the world. It is geared to assist in managing both large and small companies. However, smaller businesses seem to gain the most benefits of a virtual phone system.

Now you're probably wondering why small businesses would have the greater benefit. First, when you're a smaller business starting out the budget is tight and many are unable to install a higher end phone system.

Therefore, the business is often times forced to operate without the costly phone system.

But today technology has made it possible for small businesses to enjoy the advantages of a communication system that big businesses utilize, thanks to Ring Central. Their primary focus is quality not quantity at a price that is way under their competition. It is surprising that Ring Central will cost a business less than $20 a month. But it is reality.

Unlike some of their competitors, Ring Central does not charge for activation of their system and there isn't hardware that is required or needs maintained. Another great advantage is they don't require a contract when using their phone system. Again, the business is assigned one account and that account is then used as the central account that manages all of the users and their locations. This is all operated online. But don't just take my word for it; check out this great product for yourself at the Ring Central site and even watch a demonstration.

NASA's solar fleet peers into coronal cavities

Friday, September 21, 2012

The sun's atmosphere dances. Giant columns of solar material ? made of gas so hot that many of the electrons have been scorched off the atoms, turning it into a form of magnetized matter we call plasma ? leap off the sun's surface, jumping and twisting. Sometimes these prominences of solar material, shoot off, escaping completely into space, other times they fall back down under their own weight.

The prominences are sometimes also the inner structure of a larger formation, appearing from the side almost as the filament inside a large light bulb. The bright structure around and above that light bulb is called a streamer, and the inside "empty" area is called a coronal prominence cavity.

Such structures are but one of many that the roiling magnetic fields and million-degree plasma create in the sun's atmosphere, the corona, but they are an important one as they can be the starting point of what's called a coronal mass ejection, or CME. CMEs are billion-ton clouds of material from the sun's atmosphere that erupt out into the solar system and can interfere with satellites and radio communications near Earth when they head our way.

"We don't really know what gets these CMEs going," says Terry Kucera, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "So we want to understand their structure before they even erupt, because then we might have a better clue about why it's erupting and perhaps even get some advance warning on when they will erupt."

Kucera and her colleagues have published a paper in the Sept. 20, 2012, issue of The Astrophysical Journal on the temperatures of the coronal cavities. This is the third in a series of papers -- the first discussed cavity geometry and the second its density -- collating and analyzing as much data as possible from a cavity that appeared over the upper left horizon of the sun on Aug. 9, 2007 (below). By understanding these three aspects of the cavities, that is the shape, density and temperature, scientists can better understand the space weather that can disrupt technologies near Earth.
