Fallen tree tears hole in Nacogdoches family's roof - KTRE.com ...

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) -

Nearly 2,000 Oncor customers are without power after a powerful thunderstorm rocked East Texas overnight Tuesday.

Company spokesman David Collier said about 1,200 in Angelina County and 750 in Nacogdoches County were still without electricity as workers work to restore power. At 4 p.m., Collier said the number had shrunk to 900 in Angelina and 420 in Nacogdoches.

School was canceled at Woden and Alto ISDs due to a power outage.

In Nacogdoches' Nottingham Forest subdivision, high winds caused damage for three residents.

"We heard a deafening sound about 1:30 in the morning. Lots of glass falling," said storm victim Myra McNellie.

Tree removal crews had the job of removing a pine tree, which fell into the living room of one home on Princess Street. A red oak tree fell on the neighbor's carport and another tree fell in the back yard of another neighbor.

Neighbors on either side are also dealing with fallen trees.

?A large red oak took out the corner of a carport. The other neighbor had a tree fall in the backyard, but luckily there was no structural damage.

The McNellies can't say the same. Their very first phone call was to the insurance company.

"And then we called 911. Police came out and kinda made sure we were safe and then the fire department came out and helped us collect pictures," said Bruce McNellie.

Weather warnings and toppled trees are a part of East Texas the McNellies contend with.

"Well, I was raised in West Texas where there was hardly any trees and I love trees and it's just part of the dues you pay when you have big trees," said Bruce.

Just to be safe, the McNellies are taking down the pine tree from which the top branches fell right into the house. The other trees within Nottingham Forest will stay in place.
